City of Victoria’s Engineering and Public Works department manages the city’s infrastructure, including transportation and water systems. It provide planning, design, and maintenance services, integrating sustainability. Functioning collaboratively with stakeholders, it ensure Victoria’s infrastructure meets the needs of its residents while promoting environmental stewardship. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of High school graduation
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of experience in road construction and maintenance

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to use hand tools, instruments, and operate power equipment proficiently
  • The candidates should be able to shovel, rake hot asphalt, and operate a jackhammer frequently
  • The candidates should be capable of lifting and moving heavy materials and equipment frequently
  • The candidates should expect a normal work environment and outside in all weather conditions continuously
  • The candidates should be comfortable with exposure to dust, vibration, and equipment noise frequently
  • The candidates should be willing to work on construction sites continuously and to work in close proximity to moving traffic frequently

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should understand and apply the techniques of asphalt raking and pavement maintenance
  • The candidates should have the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, utility information sheets, and grade sheets accurately
  • The candidates should demonstrate the capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and supervisors
  • The candidates should prioritize safety and demonstrate the ability to work and operate equipment safely
  • The candidates should possess a Snow and Ice Removal Certification
  • The candidates should hold a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to prepare job sites for paving by breaking up damaged edges or failures with a cut saw or jackhammer
  • The candidates should be able to read site plans and assist excavation equipment operator by hand locating underground services
  • The candidates should be able to breakout and repair or replace castings with a jackhammer
  • The candidates should be able to shovel and rake materials such as gravel, concrete, and asphalt to required grades and depths
  • The candidates should be able to operate equipment such as powered tampers or vibratory rollers to compact gravel, finish roll hot asphalt, infrared heaters or hand torches, spray kettles, crack seal unit, crane-equipped service truck and Thermolay hot box truck to transport materials, equipment, and crew
  • The candidates should be able to assist in setting up and taking down of traffic control signage and delineators and perform flagging duties
  • The candidates should be able to perform snow and ice control functions using a skid steer loader or a service truck equipped with a sand/salt unit, snowplow , checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses, and lights
  • The candidates should be able to report accidents and damage repairs to the supervisor and mechanic shop
  • The candidates should be able to refuel trucks and equipment as required and check first aid and safety equipment
  • The candidates should be able to fill out daily equipment logs and time sheets
