Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as Grade 12
Experience: Candidates should have minimum 3 years of supervisory experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be available for weekend work as it is a requirement; this is not a Monday to Friday position
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work nights as this position involves solely night work for the duration of the position’s term
  • The candidates should have knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to maintenance operations

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the spring/summer sweep program, as well as relevant occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • The candidates should have experience planning, scheduling, assigning, and supervising the work of subordinates and demonstrate the ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions, communicate orally and in writing, and maintain simple records
  • The candidates should have experience leading crews, employee mentoring, and training and possess knowledge of the PARS Operating Procedures and SOPs and demonstrate experience with implementing change and demonstrate supervisory skills and the ability to implement safety practices and procedures
  • The candidates should possess excellent communication skills (written and verbal), as well as analytical and problem-solving skills and exhibit exemplary customer service skills and possess knowledge of City policies, bylaws, legislation, and collective agreements
  • The candidates should be able to monitor work plans for timeliness, quantity, quality, productivity, unit costing, and accomplishments and have experience and demonstrated expertise with Google Applications Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, SDMS, LMS, and SAP
  • The candidates should hold a valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake endorsement (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
  • The candidates should have experience monitoring and coaching employees and resolving issues with employees and should be adaptable to changing priorities, whether due to managerial direction or weather dependency
  • The candidates should be able to work at various locations around the City, including areas that may not be reachable by public transit and satellite locations from trailers that will move throughout the season
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment (including medical monitoring and being clean-shaven for proper equipment fit) is a requirement for this position
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work and make decisions independently and should demonstrate service excellence, embrace diversity, and promote inclusiveness

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to direct and supervise staff daily in the field, participating with the Roadways Maintenance Supervisor(s) in evaluating staff and providing feedback, and effective recommendations into the disciplinary process of subordinates as part of the spring/summer nights sweeping program
  • The candidates should be able to coach and mentor field staff in a way that creates a culture for growth and development and be able to evaluate the current capabilities and productivity of individual crew members and identify training and development needs
  • The candidates should be able to provide technical support for Sweeping and Flushing operations and be able to ensure appropriate and effective delivery of work, considering time, quality, and cost/budget
  • The candidates should be able to conduct field-level monitoring and hold employees accountable for the performance of work performed, providing feedback as required to Night crew leadership for the spring/summer night sweeping staff, including attendance, time reporting, coaching, and assisting in the management of equipment and tools
  • The candidates should be able to lead crews to various job sites according to predetermined schedules, assess field conditions upon arrival, direct the setup of equipment and personnel, and initiate appropriate traffic control and related safety measures as required
  • The candidates should be able to ensure appropriate OSCAM and other required permits are in place before starting projects and able to respond to worksite incidents and report incidents as necessary
  • The candidates should be able to provide professional advice, opinions, assistance, and services to District Inspectors and Roadway Maintenance Supervisors as required and able to report the completion of work based on predetermined work plans through various tracking methods
