Sherbrooke Restoration Commission based in Sherbrooke, NS is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Sawyer – sawmill. Sherbrooke Restoration Commission is a dedicated organization committed to preserving and revitalizing the historic charm of Sherbrooke Village. As custodians of the region’s rich heritage, the Commission oversees restoration projects, cultural events, and educational programs aimed at showcasing the area’s unique history and heritage. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Salary: $21.05 hourly for 70 hours bi-weekly
Employment Type: Seasonal employment Full time
Location: Sherbrooke, NS
Shifts: Day, Weekend
Work setting: Rural area, Museum, and Heritage/historical site

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have experience of 1 to less than 2 years
Technical experience: Interpretation/guiding 
Security and safety: Criminal record check, and Vulnerable sector check

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work in noisy environments and be tolerant of odors
  • The candidates should be able to work in dusty conditions and in hot environments
  • The candidates should be comfortable with repetitive tasks and capable of handling heavy loads
  • The candidates should be physically fit to manage demanding tasks and possess manual dexterity
  • The candidates should demonstrate attention to detail and be adaptable to a combination of sitting, standing, and walking
  • The candidates should be able to stand for extended periods and perform bending, crouching, and kneeling tasks
  • The candidates should be able to handle weights up to 45 kg (100 lbs) and more than 45 kg (100 lbs)

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess efficient interpersonal skills and demonstrate excellent oral communication
  • The candidates should be team players and show initiative
  • The candidates should be accurate in their work and demonstrate client focus
  • The candidates should be dependable and exercise good judgment
  • The candidates should be organized

Candidate Status:

  • Candidate must be a Canadian Citizen or temporary or permanent resident of Canada
  • Candidate must have legal authorization (Work Permit) to work in Canada
  • If Candidates are unable to fulfill above mentioned requirements, don’t apply for the position

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to examine logs and rough lumber to decide the best lumber cuts accurately and monitor logs and lumber movement to ensure cuts are made according to specifications diligently
  • The candidates should be able to set up and adjust saw equipment proficiently, replace blades or bands on sawmill equipment as needed, and clean and lubricate sawmill equipment systematically
  • The candidates should also be able to conduct guided tours of museums, gallery exhibitions, historical, heritage, and other sites, answer inquiries, and provide information courteously and accurately
