Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as a Grade 10 or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of directly related experience in commercial landscape, horticulture and/or tree maintenance including operating industrial landscape maintenance equipment and tools

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy equipment and materials, although this requirement is occasional
  • The candidates should be prepared for short periods of intense concentration while operating equipment, which is also occasional
  • The candidates should be aware of exposure to dust, jarring, equipment noise, and vibration, which are occasional and should be willing to work outside in all weather conditions, as this is continuous
  • The candidates should be prepared to work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to chemicals, fertilizers, and biohazards, although this is occasional
  • The candidates should expect exposure to traffic, which is occasional
  • The candidates should prioritize working safely on job sites and able to repair and perform routine maintenance on equipment

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to understand and carry out job-related instructions
  • The candidates should be capable of operating a variety of industrial-rated equipment and vehicles
  • The candidates should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • The candidates should be skilled in dealing effectively with the public and outside agencies
  • The candidates must possess a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform mowing, trimming, weeding, digging, raking, and removing refuse and debris
  • The candidates should be able to prepare, plant, and maintain flower and shrub beds, landscapes, boulevards, turf, sports fields, and young trees
  • The candidates should be able to construct and maintain pathways, hard infrastructure, playgrounds, irrigation systems, furniture, playground equipment, ponds, and streams
  • The candidates should be able to assist with maintaining cemetery grounds and participate in interments
  • The candidates should be able to perform tasks such as grinding stumps, chipping brush, and, with direct supervision, light pruning
  • The candidates should be able to water trees, baskets, turf, and various garden landscapes, as well as maintain tree wells, tree grates, and tree guards
  • The candidates should be able to flag and direct traffic around equipment and operations and in public laneways
  • The candidates should be able to collect data for the purpose of updating inventory and data collection apps, as well as record accurate daily equipment logs, material slips, time sheets, and tree watering or maintenance records
  • The candidates should be able to provide instructions and information to other staff as required and respond to general inquiries from the public and other departments regarding park maintenance
  • The candidates should be able to conduct pre- and post-trip inspections, perform minor maintenance to vehicles, tools, and equipment, including various industrial-sized trucks, brush chippers, loaders, stump grinders, industrial tractors, small cranes, commercial ride-on mowers, light power equipment, various small power tools, and hand tools related to park maintenance
