This division is responsible for overseeing waste collection, recycling programs, and waste diversion initiatives. Their mission is to minimize the environmental impact of waste disposal while ensuring the city remains clean and green. Requirements:

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be physically capable of performing required duties (accommodation will be provided in all parts of the hiring process as required under the City’s Employment Accommodation Policy and the Joint Modified Work Program in the Collective Agreement) and be able to work in all weather conditions
  • The candidates should have a good driving record and familiarity with the location of major city streets
  • The candidates should be prepared for the possibility of shift work in conformance with the Collective Agreement

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements
  • The candidates should be familiar with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations for the safe performance of their duties and responsibilities or be capable of obtaining familiarity with the same
  • The candidates should possess and be able to maintain as appropriate, any valid Province of Ontario requirements to operate mechanized equipment
  • The candidates should have the ability to use or learn to use various technical devices related to the position
  • The candidates should have the ability to deal courteously with the public
  • The candidates should have the ability to communicate in relation to their job duties

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to operate a wide variety of collection vehicles and equipment independently or with a crew member
  • The candidates should be able to move carts/bags to the truck and use appropriate mechanisms to dump or manually lift onto the truck
  • The candidates should be able to operate mechanical equipment attached to vehicles/equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • The candidates should be able to lift and load garbage, recyclable materials, organics, organic yard waste, and special pick-up items such as household appliances, discarded furniture, wood, carpet, and electronics
  • The candidates should be able to place empty carts and containers back to the set-out location in a tidy manner
  • The candidates should assist the operator by signaling the vehicle, which is being maneuvered or backed up when on a two-person crew
  • The candidates should be able to drive the vehicle to designated disposal facilities and unload all materials in accordance with the requirements of the facility operator
  • The candidates should perform a Daily Pre-Trip Inspection Report (Circle Check), identify and report vehicle and equipment malfunctions, and maintain the vehicle and equipment in a clean and tidy condition
  • The candidates should complete reports (e.g., Driver’s Collision/Incident Report) related to assigned duties and responsibilities
  • The candidates should operate a 2-way radio or mobile phone
  • The candidates should perform other duties at this wage grade level or lower, such as laboring-type duties, maintenance, and cleaning activities when not operating the assigned vehicle or equipment
  • The candidates should perform work in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner
