Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should do shift work in conformance with the Collective Agreement
  • The candidates should have the ability to use or learn to use various technical devices related to the position
  • The candidates should be physically capable of performing required duties (accommodation will be provided in all parts of the hiring process as required under the City’s Employment Accommodation Policy and the Joint Modified Work Program in the Collective Agreement) and be able to work in all weather conditions

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements
  • The candidates should be familiar with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations for the safe performance of their duties and responsibilities or be capable of obtaining familiarity with the same
  • The candidates should possess and be able to maintain, as appropriate, any valid Province of Ontario requirements to operate mechanized equipment and have a good driving record and familiarity with the location of major city streets
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to deal courteously with the public and possess effective communication skills in relation to their job duties

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to operate a wide variety of collection vehicles and equipment independently or with a crew member, including moving carts/bags to the truck and using appropriate mechanisms to dump or manually lift onto the truck
  • The candidates should be able to operate mechanical equipment attached to vehicles/equipment in a safe and efficient manner, lifting and loading garbage, recyclable materials, organics, organic yard waste, and special pick-up items such as household appliances, discarded furniture, wood, carpet, and electronics
  • The candidates should be able to place empty carts and containers back to the set-out location in a tidy manner, assist the operator by signaling the vehicle when maneuvering or backing up on a two-person crew, and drive the vehicle to designated disposal facilities to unload materials in accordance with facility requirements
  • The candidates should be able to perform a Daily Pre-Trip Inspection Report (Circle Check), identify and report vehicle and equipment malfunctions, and maintain the vehicle and equipment in a clean and tidy condition
  • The candidates should be able to complete reports (e.g., Driver’s Collision/Incident Report) related to assigned duties and responsibilities, operating a 2-way radio or mobile phone, and performing other duties at this wage-grade level or lower, such as laboring-type duties, maintenance, and cleaning activities when not operating assigned vehicles or equipment
