Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of community college Police Foundations or Law and Security Certificate
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of 2 years of security experience in a transit environment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to deal with physical situations and physically control/restrain others when necessary
  • The candidates should be able to work outside in all weather conditions
  • The candidates should be available for unplanned overtime, work a variety of scheduled shifts, including split shifts, weekends, and evenings

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have related experience in dealing with people and enforcement procedures, which may be considered as alternate relevant experience
  • The candidates must obtain and maintain Special Constable designation
  • The candidates should have good knowledge of security or law enforcement operations, as well as the duties of a Special Constable with Peace Officer authority, including the use/application of the Criminal Code of Canada, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Trespass to Property Act, Provincial Offences Act, Liquor Licence Act, Safe Streets Act, MFIPPA, as well as related Federal and Provincial Statutes, and Transit By-law
  • The candidates should understand City/Branch/Division policies and procedures affecting Transit operations, including standard operating procedures and emergency standing orders
  • The candidates should be familiar with court processes and procedures and should have knowledge of personal and physical security methods
  • The candidates should have knowledge of investigative and evidence gathering techniques
  • The candidates should be trained in crowd control and emergency response techniques
  • The candidates should be proficient in dispute resolution techniques and be familiar with electrical and computerized security equipment
  • The candidates should have knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
  • The candidates should be able to work independently, with minimal supervision, and collaboratively with peers and managers as part of a team
  • The candidates should be capable of relating to transit customers while working in a public environment and dealing with difficult or confrontational behaviors
  • The candidates should possess leadership, analytical, problem-solving and negotiation skills
  • The candidates should demonstrate assertiveness, self-control and have strong conflict/dispute/crisis resolution skills
  • The candidates should be computer literate in MS Office Suite in a Windows environment, including the use of Ozone and the Internet
  • The candidates should be able to build and maintain relationships within the community, with stakeholders, and other agencies
  • The candidates should demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of all people and cultures
  • The candidates should possess organizational and time management skills to deal effectively with multiple demands, conflicting priorities, and deadlines
  • The candidates should have excellent interpersonal, communication, and report writing skills
  • The candidates should possess neat and legible handwriting
  • The candidates should have effective public relations and public speaking skills
  • The candidates should be able to use portable corporate communications technologies, such as 2-way radio, etc.
  • The candidates should be able to drive a City vehicle and possess a work record of good attendance/job performance
  • The candidates should be respectful, able to relate to Transit customers, co-workers, and the general public, and able to work in a non-confrontational manner
  • The candidates should possess cultural awareness, value diversity, sensitive to others and be of good moral character and habits
  • The candidates should be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada
  • The candidates should be at least 18 years of age and be lawfully eligible to work in Canada
  • The candidates should not have been convicted of a criminal offence or been convicted of an offence for which a pardon has been granted
  • The candidates should provide proof of a valid Standard First Aid Certificate and valid CPR-Level C
  • The candidates must learn, meet, and maintain Transit Special Constable Services standards in the use of oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray, baton, and the use of force continuum
  • The candidates should possess the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Certificate of Results for the Constable Selection System
  • The candidates will be required to undergo physical fitness testing with the Transit Special Constable Recruiters. Candidates will be required to successfully complete the Ontario Police Fitness PIN test
  • The candidates should undergo Fingerprinting, Driver’s licence history, Credit check, Background reference check, Written MMPI, Interview with Psychologist

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to understand Federal/Provincial/Municipal laws
  • The candidates should be able to display tact and diplomacy
  • The candidates should be able to comprehend the Special Constable contract with the Ottawa Police Services Board
  • The candidates should be able to follow rules and regulations governing a Special Constable appointment (as amended from time to time)
  • The candidates should be able to adhere to Corporate/Branch/Division policies and standards
  • The candidates should be able to uphold the Corporate/Branch Code of Ethics, Core Values, and Mission Statement, ensuring consistency and compatibility with Ottawa Police Service policies and standards
  • The candidates should be able to exercise sound judgment and make authoritative decisions where time may not permit soliciting advice from senior staff
