Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have a post-secondary degree in Social Services, Criminology, or a related field
Experience: Candidates should possess experience analyzing, reviewing, developing, and implementing legislation, regulations, operational policies, and standards of service delivery in a correctional institutional setting

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate a willingness to travel within Yukon and Canada via airplane or vehicle
  • The candidates should be available for rotating weekly after-hours on-call duty at the correctional center
  • The candidates should have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing
  • The candidates should possess the ability to establish effective and cooperative working relationships
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to provide leadership and develop consensus among stakeholders on internal and external issues

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have knowledge of correctional legislation, current national and international correctional best practices, and human rights legislation and best practices as they relate to corrections
  • The candidates should have experience managing a large number of employees (20+) in an operationally dynamic environment in all areas of human resource management
  • The candidates should have experience managing financial resources, including forecasting, budgeting, contract management, procurement, and financial reporting
  • The candidates should have experience working with internal and external stakeholders and community partners to develop, sustain, and evaluate programs, including partnerships with First Nations governments, non-governmental organizations, and private enterprises
  • The candidates should have and maintain a valid Security Clearance, including a vulnerable sector check (required prior to the first day of work)
  • The candidates should have and maintain a valid Class 5 driver’s license (required prior to the first day of work)

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to oversee and manage daily operations within the Whitehorse Corrections Centre, ensuring adherence to policies, procedures, and relevant regulations
  • The candidates should be able to develop and implement strategic plans to enhance the overall efficiency, safety, and effectiveness of correctional facilities in Yukon
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate and collaborate with various departments, staff, and external stakeholders to foster a positive and collaborative working environment
  • The candidates should be able to ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards, addressing any issues related to inmate rights, staff conduct, and facility security
  • The candidates should be able to implement and monitor programs aimed at inmate rehabilitation, promoting education, vocational training, and mental health support to facilitate successful reintegration into society
