Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Three (3) year diploma/degree or equivalent in Science (Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, or Biotechnology, or closely related field)
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of three (3) years of science-related technical duties in a laboratory environment; experience working in a containment level 2 (CL-2) or higher facility is strongly preferred

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a strong background and expertise in laboratory techniques related to molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, analytical chemistry, analytical instrumentation, environmental science, and food science
  • The candidates should have knowledge of relevant federal and provincial health regulations, including Public Health Agency (PHAC) Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines, Human Pathogens and Toxins Act (HPTA), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), and Occupation Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
  • The candidates should possess expert knowledge related to Canadian Biosafety Standards Containment mandatory requirements for containment level 2 (CL2) laboratories
  • The candidates should demonstrate a proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, demanding, and highly professional environment
  • The candidates should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • The candidates should exhibit strong administrative and organizational skills
  • The candidates should showcase excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • The candidates should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • The candidates should have proven time management skills and strong attention to detail
  • The candidates should be computer literate in Windows applications including Microsoft Office

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide technical expertise and support to faculty, staff, students, and the Academic Chair in the Department of Applied Science and Environmental Technology (ASET)
  • The candidates should be able to select and prepare apparatus and materials required for laboratory sessions and be accountable for the start-up, set-up, shutdown, clean-up, and restocking of materials for all scheduled laboratory activities
  • The candidates should be able to train faculty members, staff, and students on the proper usage of lab equipment and instruments and monitor instructional supplies, consumables, and equipment in the ASET science laboratories
  • The candidates should be able to order equipment and supplies for all ASET science programs, troubleshoot equipment failures or malfunctions, and arrange for regular maintenance of lab equipment and instruments
  • The candidates should be able to maintain accurate records for all lab activities, including inventory control, capital equipment maintenance, operational and capital expenditures, waste disposal, equipment non-conformance, incident reports, and health and safety compliance
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the overall orderliness and cleanliness of ASET science laboratories and keep up-to-date with new technological developments related to ASET science laboratories
  • The candidates should be able to assist Facilities Management staff, custodial staff, and contractors on health and safety matters in ASET science laboratories and develop, maintain, and deliver program-specific health and safety training
  • The candidates should be able to ensure compliance with Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and applicable government legislation, evaluate laboratories for unsafe conditions and practices, and identify opportunities to reduce risks
  • The candidates should be able to maintain critical databases for the Biosafety and Biowaste programs, conduct inspections and audits to ensure compliance with regulations and institutional policies, and perform decontamination, disinfection, and disposal procedures for infectious materials
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate the receipt, shipment, and transport of infectious material according to WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations and perform accident and incident investigations as per the College’s health and safety policies and procedures
  • The candidates should be able to perform other duties as assigned by the Academic Chair, ASET, and work during scheduled hours, including evenings and/or weekends, as required
