Requirements:

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be at least 18 years old
  • The candidates should be available for call 24 hours per day and respond to the designated work site within two hours of receiving the call
  • The candidates should be prepared to perform work for up to 12 hours per shift, during which they may be traveling away from home and be away for 24-48 hours at a time
  • The candidates should be comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather conditions

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates must possess a valid driver’s license
  • The candidates should be able to walk long distances on railroad roadbeds
  • The candidates should have the ability to lift up to 100lbs on occasion
  • The candidates must be able to pass the required examinations, read and understand safety instructions, books of rules, instructions and regulations, timetables, bulletins, waybills, placards, and other written or printed material
  • The candidates should have a valid Canadian passport, allowing entry/re-entry to the United States

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to work in either train or yard service depending on their seniority
  • The candidates should be able to carry out specific instructions detailing a train’s route and specific movements
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate the switching of cars, which includes coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out coupling devices
  • The candidates should be able to observe, interpret, and relay signals and other indications that affect the movement of the train
  • The candidates should be able to signal crew members for the movement of the engine or train using specific signals or radio communication, indicating when to start, stop, back up, set, or release air brakes
  • The candidates should be able to possess a thorough understanding of and adhere to the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), General Orders, and Bulletins as they relate to the safe movement of trains, goods, and hazardous materials, ensuring the safety of CPKC employees and the general public
  • The candidates should be able to provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in emergency situations, as stipulated in the operating rules
  • The candidates should be able to move on and off moving or stationary equipment while the train is performing industrial, station, or yard switching
  • The candidates should be able to ride a moving car by hanging onto grab irons or ladders, sometimes for extended periods of time
  • The candidates should be able to accurately fill out forms, including train orders and switch lists, and prepare clear and legible reports as required
  • The candidates should be able to handle emergency situations, operate fire extinguishers, and apply first aid techniques as needed
  • The candidates should be constantly alert to changing conditions and events and take safe and responsible actions as required
