Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completed Grade 12
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of experience in road maintenance
Physical Requirements:
- The candidate should be able to shovel, rake, lift, and move heavy materials and equipment often
- The candidate should have normal physical capabilities for general tasks, normal physical capabilities for general tasks
- The candidate should be able to drive often as part of the job, work outside in all weather conditions continuously
- The candidate should be able to work on construction sites often, work in close proximity to moving traffic frequently
Other Requirements:
- The candidate should understand and apply techniques of road construction and pavement maintenance, operate a hydraulic crane equipped truck and related equipment
- The candidate should be able to use hand tools and power equipment, read and understand engineering drawings, utility information sheets, and grade sheets
- The candidate should establish and maintain effective working relationships, deal effectively with the public and outside agencies, work and operate equipment safely
- The candidate should have Snow and Ice Removal Certification (12 hours), Traffic Control Person Certification (16 hours)
- The candidate should hold a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence with air brake endorsement (16-20 hours) and overweight trailer endorsement
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to operate a crane-equipped service truck to pick up and deliver various materials and equipment such as compressors, cold mix asphalt, gravel, and concrete, read and interpret engineering plans and grade sheets to determine the location of underground services per BC-1 report and hand locate underground services
- The candidates should be able to load and unload materials by hand or using hydraulic telescoping crane, box lift hoist, forklift, or front end loader to place or remove steel plates, catch basins, cast iron castings, and manhole sections from road excavations
- The candidates should be able to operate various construction equipment including jack hammers, spray kettles, infrared heaters, crack sealing units, shovels, rakes, and vibratory rollers
- The candidates should be able to perform pre- and post-trip inspections, checking fluid levels, belts, hoses, lights, and report repairs and damages to supervisors and mechanic shops; check first aid and safety equipment and complete daily equipment logs, crane logs, and timesheets, refuel trucks and equipment
- The candidates should be able to respond to material requests from various crews and sections, determine order of delivery, requisition materials and supplies from City stores or outside suppliers, move equipment and materials to new locations, and clean up job sites including removal and disposal of construction rubble
- The candidates should be able to conduct road maintenance inspections, repair minor road failures such as potholes, and advise supervisors of major failures, assist crews with road maintenance tasks like asphalt raking and instruct staff in crane operation procedures
- The candidates should be able to post and remove traffic or pedestrian warning signs and perform flagging duties, maintain an inventory of road signs for the section
- The candidates should be able to code material slips and work orders, monitor cold mix asphalt supply, and reorder from suppliers, produce pre-cast concrete barriers by setting up forms and pouring concrete
