The Department of Justice in Government of the Northwest Territories is based in Fort Smith is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Warden, FSCC. Justice as a department is known to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. We carry out mandates in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Languages
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualification such as a bachelor’s Degree in a Social Science or a related field with ten years of progressively more responsible corrections service experience, including five years direct correctional facility management experience
Experience: Candidates need previous supervisory experience of staff in an operational setting and also have an experience in managing a budget and determining variances

Other Requirements:

  • The candidate should have skills such as demonstrated sustainable management skills, a demonstrated ability to manage labor relations issues and also have demonstrated communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups and various special interest groups
  • The candidate should have demonstrated knowledge of correctional practices and programs, demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills and exemplifies the values of the organization through actions and deeds
  • The candidate having awareness of northern Indigenous traditions and values would be an asset

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be able to report to the Assistant Director Facility Operations of the Corrections Service and also be responsible for the management, operation and administration of the financial, physical and human resources at the FSCC
  • The candidate should be responsible for the delivery of the security operations and persons in custody programs so that persons in custody and staff are safe, secure and public safety is upheld
  • The candidate should be responsible the management of $6,115,000 budget (salaries and O&M)
  • The candidate’s responsibilities includes the management of food services and should be in direct supervision of five full time permanent staff with a total of 44 permanent full time positions
  • The candidate should be able to hold custody a capacity of 23 female and 21 male persons and also perform other duties that include the management and oversight of all security, persons in custody programs and all human, physical and financial resources as well ensures persons in custody are managed in the least restrictive manner and provides opportunities for their rehabilitation and reintegration
  • The candidate should be able to develop effective linkages with community stakeholder’s Community Corrections, RCMP, and other Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) department and also develop and issue Standing Operating Procedures for the facility so that operations are in compliance with divisional directives and Territorial and Federal Legislation
