Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have university degree in zoology, biology, animal science or related discipline
Experience: Candidates should have four to six years’ progressively responsible experience in animal husbandry

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience working in a CAZA/AZA/ZAA accredited zoo, with operant conditioning/animal training procedures, specifically focusing on positive reinforcement training, and supervisory experience
  • The candidates should possess a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence and provide a current driver’s abstract demonstrating a safe driving record
  • The candidates should possess a valid, recognized Firearms Acquisition Certificate, with training provided upon hire and have knowledge of current CAZA standards of animal care, facility upkeep, and conservation programs
  • The candidates should be familiar with current literature, standards, trends, and practices applicable to facility operation, program planning, and customer service within a zoological setting
  • The candidates should have knowledge of corporate policies and procedures, collective agreements, occupational health and safety legislation, Workers’ Compensation, preparation and control of budgets, and purchasing and tendering procedures
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, including the preparation and presentation of reports and exhibit the ability to plan, direct, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate the work of staff
  • The candidates should possess demonstrated leadership skills necessary to promote a positive and constructive working environment and able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Councillors, assigned staff, co-workers, and the public
  • The candidates should be capable of evaluating program effectiveness and developing proposals for change of methods and procedures and have proficiency in using a computer, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and Species 360/ZIMS

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to support and promote the health and safety and coordinate and direct the work of employees who oversee the safety and care of all animals at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo
  • The candidates should be able to plan, assign work schedules, supervise, coach, assess staffing needs, identify layoff and recall requirements, and participate in the evaluation of the work including attendance management and assisting with progressive discipline and grievance resolution of staff
  • The candidates should be able to lead the daily operations of zoo-related activities and able to lead staff training and development to ensure proper care for animals while maintaining the safety of staff, including training for operant conditioning/animal training programs for all animals
  • The candidates should be able to assist with the preparation of, and monitor the operating and capital budgets for assigned operating and capital programs; including annual reporting of activities and recommend available resources for allocation
  • The candidates should be able to prepare and evaluate specifications for new zoo exhibits, animal exhibit maintenance, and zoo repairs/replacements, procuring materials and services and able to provide oversight for the development and implementation of customer service and public engagement processes
  • The candidates should be able to represent the zoo and provide support to assigned committees and stakeholders by attending meetings, preparing reports, and coordinating projects as they relate to maintaining and monitoring standards of safety, cleanliness, and security of the zoo, and act as a liaison with public interest groups and community organizations
  • The candidates should be able to review and respond to public, councillors, staff, and civic Department concerns by providing policy and procedure information and technical advice regarding assigned operating and capital programs and able to provide technical advice and project estimations regarding the future development of the zoo, including a collection plan, conservation, education, and breeding management plan
  • The candidates should be able to prepare comprehensive reports and correspondence related to Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo matters, including the development of management and business plans, and Council reports and able to conduct safety audits and prepare written reports and able to provide managerial support in the absence of the Zoo Manager and able to perform other related duties
  • The candidates should be able to support and promote the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations, and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures, maintaining and monitoring programs that affect the health and safety of employees and the general public
