Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Post secondary University program in Horticulture or Turf Management
Experience: Candidates should have 3 years experience in Park Operations

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be comfortable working primarily in parkland with exposure to temperatures, varying weather conditions, and contaminants of various kinds
  • The candidates should be capable of safely operating and maintaining small and large vehicles and equipment

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License and having a valid Class “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License
  • The candidates should have a valid Standard First Aid and CPR ‘C’ certification or be able to obtain it prior to the employment start date
  • The candidates should have the ability to operate Microsoft Office programs and relevant City of Mississauga software

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to assist in planning, designing, planting, and maintaining seasonal flower beds, shrubs, trees, and planters in a geographical location
  • The candidates should be able to assist in performing Integrated Pest Management, cultural practices, and yearly renovations, in line with city standards and assist with the purchase of plant material
  • The candidates should be able to use chainsaws and brush chippers manually and responsible for pruning trees, shrubs, and perennials and assist with and participate in the Goose program
  • The candidates should be able to assist with the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of minor irrigation systems and and report on Parks Amenities and property and act as the Parks Person I – Horticulture in their absence
  • The candidates should be able to provide leadership to team members, train on equipment, policies and standards, keep records, and assist with establishing work plans and participate in litter and garbage collection
  • The candidates should be able to assist with liaising, including but not limited to: General Contractors Other City Departments Parks, Planning, Parks Development and FPM
  • The candidates should be able to assist with the setup and takedown of community and special events, including delivery of materials and equipment and answer inquiries from the public and city staff
  • The candidates should be able to perform administrative functions such as but not limited to P-Card reconciliation, IFI WO completion, Active NetShare and Point uploads and maintain equipment and tools regularly
  • The candidates should be able to perform winter maintenance as needed, including but not limited to hand shoveling, plowing, and de-icing and perform general carpentry work and participate in the seasonal pruning program and participate in the Parks on-call program
  • The candidates should be able to assist with turf maintenance, hard surface maintenance, and leaf clean-up and assist with the Natural Ice Rink Program and participate in divisional committees
