Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of post-secondary diploma in Culinary Arts and Culinary Management
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of one year of experience in planning and preparing meals in a commercial kitchen

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work in a fast-paced environment, delegating tasks and coordinating volunteers
  • The candidates should have strong organization skills and the ability to act independently as required, exercising good judgment
  • The candidates should have a passion for promoting and maintaining a healthy and safe workplace and the ability to work respectfully and effectively in a team environment
  • The candidates should have access to reliable transportation, as work hours may be outside of public transportation operations
  • The candidates should be able to work from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM Monday to Friday, with the possibility of weekend and evening hours to support operational requirements

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a current Food Handler Certification from a recognized Food Handler Training provider in Ontario and hold Red Seal Certification as a Cook
  • The candidates should have knowledge of and experience working with an older adult population in a health-related setting
  • The candidates should have previous leadership experience guiding and supporting volunteers and staff
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of safe operating and maintenance procedures for all kitchen equipment
  • The candidates should have knowledge of Canada’s Food Guide, Public Health Act, healthy nutrition, and special diets and possess excellent communication skills with a strong commitment to delivering quality customer service
  • The candidates should demonstrate a commitment to Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion and provide a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check as a condition of hire at their expense
  • The candidates should have current Standard First Aid and CPR-C with AED certification or be willing to obtain it and provide proof of current and valid certificate(s), licenses, and educational qualifications, if applicable

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to oversee the daily operation of a commercial kitchen, including minor troubleshooting and decision-making related to meal preparation, serving, and cleanup
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate and plan a weekly menu based on client needs and team input, including placing a weekly order from the food supplier and shopping for remaining items and prepare a nutritious lunch meal and snacks for a group of older adults (group size varies, up to 50 people) participating in the Senior Day Program and Community Dining Program
  • The candidates should be able to work within budget constraints, ensuring fiscally responsible purchasing of food supplies, maintaining records, and completing reconciliation of the procurement card and create individual meal plans to effectively address participant needs, providing meal accommodations for a variety of special diets on a daily basis diabetic, low-sodium, softened, pureed, allergies
  • The candidates should be able to produce quality meals by adhering to Canada’s Food Guide and the Public Health Act and ensure ongoing and adequate rotation and storage of food supplies and stock
  • The candidates should be able to ensure proper handling of linens and coordinate with the supplier for the ongoing laundering of aprons, towels, and dishcloths and perform all aspects of volunteer management for a large number of volunteers, including recruitment, supervising, scheduling, and training
  • The candidates should be able to oversee 3-5 volunteers per shift with table setting, food preparation, handling and storage, serving, and cleanup and ensure an exceptional customer experience for guests by addressing general inquiries from the public and helping to resolve any issues or concerns
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a clean, safe, sanitary, and organized work area and ensure food deliveries are accurately and properly stored, and dishes are cleaned in accordance with safe food handling guidelines and procedures
  • The candidates should be able to monitor the use of kitchen equipment, follow standard operating procedures to ensure safe operation, and ensure timely reporting on items needing repair or attention and support Public Health inspections, ensuring kitchen operations are in alignment with regulations
