Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have completion of Grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by post-secondary courses in Criminology and By-Law Enforcement & Investigative Skills
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience related to investigations and enforcement (including testifying in court) care, handling and training of dogs and other animals such as various species of, reptiles, birds, mammals and amphibians
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be in good physical condition, possess strength, and agility for all aspects of the Animal Control Officer I position, including long periods of foot patrol, managing, and lifting large dogs and heavy articles
- The candidates should have the ability to handle injured and possibly vicious animals with minimum personal risk
- The candidates should undergo a Police Record Check as a requirement of this position and a clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions
- The candidates should provide a copy of their five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 30 days of this posting
- The candidates should provide a copy of their five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 30 days of this posting
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have a working knowledge of the principles, methods, and equipment related to the handling of vicious, stray, or sick animals
- The candidates should possess excellent interpersonal skills and effective verbal and written communication skills
- The candidates should demonstrate the ability to manage and defuse conflict with people from varying backgrounds
- The candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, and other database software applications
- The candidates should have considerable knowledge of the street system of Vancouver
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to have strong investigative skills, attention to detail and sufficient knowledge about the Animal Control Bylaws
- The candidates should be able to perform investigative and regulatory work, patrol the City of Vancouver parks and public spaces
- The candidates should be able to educate the public about the Vancouver Charter as it relates to Animal Control By-law 9150 and ensure public safety
- The candidates should be able to respond to and investigate complaints, impound and transport stray animals, handle the storage and identification of deceased animals, issue AC Warning Notices and tickets (By-law Violation Notices) while on duty as an Animal Control Officer I
- The candidates should be able to assist with collecting evidence and statements for investigations and be able to handle potentially dangerous animals effectively
- The candidates should be able to ensure all vehicles and equipment are fully functional, clean, and stocked
- The candidates should be able to maintain a detailed and professional notebook and may be required to attend court proceedings
- The candidates should be able to work evenings and weekends, capable of patrolling parks, beaches, and city streets by foot, bike, and vehicle during operational hours including times when there is limited daylight
