Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technology Diploma
Experience: Candidates should have one-year experience in a rodent husbandry including clean and dirty cage wash procedures

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to consistently stand and sit for long periods of time
  • The candidates should have the ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have no known allergies to rats or mice
  • The candidates should have effective oral and written communication skills and work effectively as a team member

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to independently perform daily or weekend animal checks and husbandry for rodents and aquatic species
  • The candidates should be able to document clinical cases and competently administer oral, topical, and injectable treatments as directed by the veterinarian or supervisor
  • The candidates should be able to wean pups following Carleton University’s Standard Operating Procedures
  • The candidates should be able to lift and move large feed and bedding bags and prepare cage and bottle supplies for daily husbandry
  • The candidates should be able to restock supplies in all areas of the facility and participate in laundry duties
  • The candidates should be able to disinfect holding rooms and surgical suites and comfortable with euthanasia techniques and tissue collection
  • The candidates should be able to monitor rodents post-operatively and assist with post-op care
  • The candidates should be able to work with large equipment such as a cage washer and perform other related duties
  • The candidate should have the ability to work 1-2 weekends a month, over holidays, and ideally 2-5 weekday shifts a month during the summer semester as needs in the facility arise
