Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
Experience: Candidates should have 3 Years of urban tree care experience

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should hold a current International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification as a Certified Arborist
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability and completion of mandatory training in: Chainsaw Operations, Ground Worker Operations, Tree Hazard Assessment, Tree Felling, Tree Pest and Disease Management, Ropes/Knots/Rigging, Bolting and Cabling, Pruning, Barricading, Flagman, Fall Protection, and Electrical Awareness
  • The candidates should possess a valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brakes Endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
  • The candidates should have a Fall Arrest certificate and hold a Standard First Aid certificate including Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • The candidates should have knowledge of City of Edmonton, WHMIS, forestry operations hazard assessments & controls and demonstrate alignment with the Cultural Commitments of Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated, and Excellent, fostering an environment for others to do the same

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to ensure safety, structural development, and health of trees by utilizing hand, power, hydraulic tools, and aerial lift units and ensure trees are free of broken, dead/diseased wood and damaged wood, and prune to remove crossing limbs and thin canopy as required
  • The candidates should be able to remove and/or pile branches and brush and provide proper clearances above roads and sidewalks, from traffic signs, streetlights, buildings, and other trees
  • The candidates should be able to “train” trees to maintain a shape consistent with characteristics of their species and ensure sidewalk and street clearance as well as accommodate park settings
  • The candidates should be able to attend to storm-damaged trees, usually broken or split limbs, remove tree stakes as necessary and remove adventitious growth (water sprouts & suckers) as required
  • The candidates should be able to stake and guy trees as required, making all necessary adjustments, bolt, cable, and brace in non-complex situations and able to thin tree crowns to limit stress on the portion of trunk weakened by the cavity or an injury
  • The candidates should be able to perform surgeries by tracing damaged wood with a surgery knife rounding the margins and remove small and large trees following directions from Parks Leader and Arborist II
  • The candidates should be able to chip brush and trees as required, knowing how to use chipping equipment safely and maintain chipping schedules and use and maintain stump grinding equipment safely and maintain stump grinding schedules
  • The candidates should be able to plant trees according to City & ISA Standards, complete structural risk assessments and identify tree pests and diseases and identify tree health care issues in the early stages
  • The candidates should be able to work on public complaints (tree problems and concerns) and attend to tree work generated by requests/complaints and able to perform other related duties as required
