Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Class 3 Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification
Experience: Candidates should have four years of wastewater treatment experience with at least two years acting as an Assistant Plant Operator or a Plant Operator

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to work with hazardous chemicals and ability to deal tactfully and effectively with other employees and the public
  • The candidates should have the ability to remain calm during emergency situations and ability to supervise the work of subordinate staff and assume responsibility for the operation of the shift
  • The candidates should have the physical ability to perform the assigned duties and willing to work shift work and ability to perform minor repairs on plant equipment
  • The candidates should provide an acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) upon offer of employment

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have graduated from a two-year, post-secondary program in a related field (water resources engineering technology, environmental engineering technology, chemical engineering technology, or civil engineering technology), successfully completed the Class 3 Wastewater Treatment Operator Exam, and have two years of experience as an Assistant Plant Operator or a Plant Operator
  • The candidates should possess a Certificate of Completion for the California State University courses for Operation of Wastewater Treatment Plants Volumes I and II and Advanced Wastewater Treatment
  • The candidates should possess a valid Fireman’s Certificate, possess a valid, recognized first aid certificate and a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s License
  • The candidates should have a current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record
  • The candidates should have knowledge of wastewater treatment procedures, operations, and general practices for the care and safe operation of plant equipment
  • The candidates should have knowledge of methods, chemicals, materials, and tools used in wastewater treatment
  • The candidates should have the ability to record meter readings and make arithmetic calculations accurately and knowledge of safety practices and procedures

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to monitor the Wastewater Treatment Plant and sewage pumping stations’ operation, alarm systems, plant security systems, and telephones by utilizing the System Control and Data Acquisition (SCDA) systems
  • The candidates should be able to review and compile manually generated reports and SCDA system reports and and inspect instrument readouts and plant equipment, and make minor repairs
  • The candidates should be able to operate wastewater pumps, automatic rakes, skimmers, and other powered equipment used in wastewater treatment and disposal, and operate bucket and hoist in the grit chamber to remove grit from tanks
  • The candidates should be able to perform routine maintenance of process equipment and related areas, such as skimming foam from bioreactors and clarifiers, and removing scum from paddles
  • The candidates should be able to acquire wastewater samples and perform tests as required at various treatment stages, and adjust pumps as scheduled
  • The candidates should be able to handle, monitor, and adjust chemicals used in the wastewater treatment process and remote lift stations and service and clean machinery and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to report operating deficiencies to the Plant Operator and participate in training, including operating procedures, equipment operation and safety, and staff meetings
  • The candidates should be able to perform duties such as conducting tours, odour surveys, and odour compliance investigations and perform the duties of the Plant Operator
  • The candidates should be able to ensure plant security is maintained, adhere to occupational health and safety rules and regulations, and promote personal hygiene
