Requirements:

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should understand the role is partially performed in an office environment and outdoors in various weather and environmental conditions
  • The candidates should be prepared for irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • The candidates should expect regular travel up to 50% across the assigned territory, sometimes without advance notice
  • The candidates should be able to meet tight deadlines and handle pressure and stress and lift up to 70 lbs
  • The candidates should be capable of responding to unexpected and emergency situations

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have between 3 to 5 years of experience in safety compliance, in troubleshooting and problem solving, relevant work experience in similar working conditions or in a regulatory or safety environment, budget management experience, labour relations experience, including interpretation of collective agreements, response to grievances, negotiations with union representatives, and discipline
  • The candidates should have experience supervising a unionized workforce and a valid Driver’s Licence
  • The candidates should have a High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)
  • The candidates should lead by example for the safety and security of all and certified in Railroad Operating Signals
  • The candidates should consider ESG principles in all operations and identify potential safety and security risks
  • The candidates should demonstrate active listening, solve problems to create value, develop themselves and others and empower others to create accountability
  • The candidates should collaborate with others and share information, set direction and inspire others, communicate with impact and demonstrate agility and drive change
  • The candidates should have general Microsoft computer skills and conduct investigations after an accident

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to lead engineering operations as outlined in CN’s operating plan and lead activities of track gangs, track employees, and hi-rail operations
  • The candidates should be able to handle engineering operations in compliance with safe work procedures, Transport Canada guidelines, and CN standards, policies, and regulations
  • The candidates should be able to apply collective agreements and company policies by conducting investigations, recommending corrective actions, and responding to grievances
  • The candidates should be able to oversee budgets and workforce productivity within CN policies and the Five Guiding Principles and lead people with clear direction and goals while providing coaching and guidance through regular performance monitoring
  • The candidates should be able to ensure clear communication of track condition and daily production information to senior management for adjustments
  • The candidates should be able to ensure track safety through regulatory inspections and input findings into the Track Inspection System (TIS) to monitor track condition and follow up on reported track issues to ensure compliance with standards
  • The candidates should be able to participate in activities related to derailments and service disruptions, working with Transportation and Mechanical teams to establish cause and future prevention
  • The candidates should be able to perform safety audits for the unionized workforce and conduct safety engagements and plan, schedule, and perform track repairs and maintenance and respond to emergencies
