Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a Bachelor’s Degree
Experience: Candidates should have 3 to 5 years of experience in safety compliance

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work in both an office environment and outdoors in various weather and environmental conditions and work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • The candidates should be able to travel regularly (up to 50%) across their assigned territory, sometimes without advance notice and meet tight deadlines and handle pressure and stress effectively
  • The candidates should be able to respond to unexpected and emergency situations and lift up to 70 lbs

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to troubleshoot and solve problems effectively, relevant work experience in similar working conditions or in a regulatory or safety environment and experience in budget management
  • The candidates should have experience in labour relations, including interpreting collective agreements, responding to grievances, negotiating with union representatives, and handling disciplinary matters
  • The candidates should have experience supervising a unionized workforce, a High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED), hold a valid Driver’s Licence and be certified in Railroad Operating Signals
  • The candidates should lead by example in safety and security practices, integrate ESG principles into operations, identify potential safety and security risks, demonstrate active listening skills, solve problems to create value and focus on developing themselves and others professionally
  • The candidates should delegate tasks and empower others while ensuring accountability, collaborate effectively and share information with stakeholders, set clear directions and inspire team members and communicate with impact
  • The candidates should be agile and drive continuous improvement, be proficient in general Microsoft computer applications and the ability to conduct investigations after accidents

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to lead engineering operations as outlined in CN’s operating plan and supervise and lead activities of track gangs, track employees, and hi-rail operations
  • The candidates should be able to handle engineering operations, ensuring compliance with safe work procedures, Transport Canada guidelines, and CN standards, policies, and regulations
  • The candidates should be able to lead people with clear direction and goals while providing coaching and guidance to employees through regular performance monitoring and apply collective agreements and company policies by conducting investigations, recommending corrective actions, and responding to grievances
  • The candidates should be able to oversee budgets and workforce productivity within CN policies and the Five Guiding Principles and ensure clear communication of track conditions and daily production information to senior management for necessary adjustments
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the safety of the track through regulatory inspections and input findings into the Track Inspection System (TIS) to monitor track condition and follow up on reported track issues to maintain compliance with standards
  • The candidates should be able to participate in activities related to derailments and service disruptions while collaborating with Transportation and Mechanical teams to establish cause and future prevention
  • The candidates should be able to perform safety audits for the unionized workforce and conduct safety engagements and plan, schedule, and perform track repairs and maintenance and respond to emergencies
