City of Saskatoon’s Saskatoon Light and Power department oversees the provision of electricity services within the city. It manages the distribution and maintenance of the electrical infrastructure to ensure reliable power supply to residents and businesses. Through efficient operations and infrastructure investments, it meets the energy needs of the community while promoting sustainability and innovation. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have successful completion of Saskatoon Light & Power Pre-Apprenticeship Skill Assessment
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the physical ability to perform the assigned duties, including the ability to climb poles and towers and work outside under varying weather conditions

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a Grade 12 education, including Physics 30, and one of the following: Foundations of Mathematics 30, Workplace and Apprenticeship 30, or Pre-Calculus 30 (classes equivalent to the former Math A30/Algebra 20 and C30/Trigonometry 30 will also be recognized)
  • The candidates should have completion of Saskatoon Light & Power Pre-Apprenticeship term or already enrolled in the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship Program as a Powerline Technician
  • The candidates should be enroll in and successfully complete the Saskatchewan Power Lineman Apprenticeship Program and receive a Saskatchewan Power Lineman Apprenticeship Certificate and complete four years of on-the-job training
  • The candidates should possess, or have the ability to successfully complete within 6 months after the date of hire, a valid Saskatchewan Class 1A Driver’s Licence
  • The candidates should provide a current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record
  • The candidates should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground primary and secondary distribution and street lighting systems
  • The candidates should be able to install, maintain, and repair energized and de-energized low voltage and high voltage lines and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to climb poles and towers or use aerial buckets, ladders, or platforms to work at various heights
  • The candidates should be able to install, inspect, patrol, maintain, repair, replace, connect, and disconnect various distribution system components, materials, and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to ensure adherence to proper work procedures, safety standards, construction standards, and other specifications
  • The candidates should be able to use protective equipment such as insulated gloves, line hose, hoods, blankets, and hot line tools for work with energized equipment
  • The candidates should be able to install, replace, and maintain service lines and cables to customers and respond to reports of customer power interruptions, locating and repairing faults
  • The candidates should be able to record load and voltage readings with volt-amp meters, maximeter, and recorders, and perform tests using phasing equipment, phase rotation tester, megger, ground resistance tester, cable fault equipment, and other test devices
  • The candidates should be able to participate in safety and first aid programs, tool and equipment inspections, and testing
  • The candidates should be able to maintain all tools and equipment pertaining to the trade and trim trees that interfere with electrical systems
