Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Certified Journeyman Carpentry recognized by Government of Alberta Advanced Education and Technology
Experience: Candidates should have experience in cabinet making and interior partition systems

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should comply with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots
  • The candidates should be able to work in environmental conditions that may include heat, cold, wet, dust, and noise
  • The candidates should demonstrate service excellence, embrace diversity, and promote inclusiveness
  • The candidates should have a commitment to continual learning, teamwork, and providing excellent customer service
  • The candidates should have the ability to perform the physical demands of the position and be capable of passing a job-related physical abilities evaluation
  • The candidates should have visual acuity, both near and far, and depth perception
  • The candidates should have sufficient strength to perform medium work requiring the frequent lifting of tools, materials, and assemblies weighing up to fifty pounds

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have active employment as a Journeyman Carpenter for the past 5 years, and experience working in a maintenance environment
  • The candidates should have a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
  • The candidates should have considerable knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of all building construction materials, the methods and techniques used to build, modify, maintain, and repair structures to withstand varying loads
  • The candidates should have knowledge of regulatory codes in the carpentry trade
  • The candidates should have the knowledge and ability to read or interpret blueprints, layout, and quantity take-offs for ordering the required materials
  • The candidates should have strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • The candidates should be able to understand, communicate, read, and write English at a level needed to meet job-related tasks and safety requirements
  • The candidates should be successful in being fit for a respirator and comply with the City of Edmonton’s Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring
  • The candidates should demonstrate alignment with the Cultural Commitments of Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated, and Excellent, fostering an environment for others to do the same

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to cut, shape, and finish materials using hand and power tools such as saws, joiners, planers, routers, sanders, and drill presses
  • The candidates should be able to cut, fit, and install glass or plastic in door and window frames and other structures
  • The candidates should be able to repair, replace, and perform preventative maintenance on structural and architectural building components
  • The candidates should be able to assemble acoustic and thermal insulating materials as well as drywall, plaster, stucco, and related materials to walls and ceilings
  • The candidates should be able to build and erect forms and pouring chutes for concrete and repair roofing surfaces with asphalt, tar, aluminium, wood, cupboards, cabinets, doors, windows, associated hardware and a variety of custom millwork
  • The candidates should be able to move and install walls, replace ceilings and floors, and repair roofs
  • The candidates should be able to perform miscellaneous service work and renovations
  • The candidates should be able to utilize technology to obtain work order information and record work
  • The candidates should be able to record data into the work order management system
  • The candidates should be able to adhere to occupational health, safety, and environmental standards and procedures
