Requirements:

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidate should demonstrate mechanical aptitude and the ability to maintain related equipment and understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions and prepare and maintain work records and forms based on plans and sketches
  • The candidate should plan, coordinate, direct, instruct, and supervise the work of others effectively and work independently with minimal supervision and exercise considerable judgment in dealing with assigned tasks and openly learn new techniques and skills related to the work

Other Requirements:

  • The candidate should successfully  and have such as a combination sewer cleaner or an equivalent combination of training and experience and considerable knowledge of methods and practices used in servicing, maintaining, and making minor repairs to equipment
  • The candidate should possess considerable knowledge and ability to read and interpret maps, measurements, depths, and diagrams for troubleshooting system blockages and failures
  • The candidate should demonstrate knowledge of methods, practices, and safe operation rules for sewer flushing, cleaning, and hydro excavation equipment and knowledge of hazards related to the work and practice safe work procedures, following all applicable WorkSafe regulations
  • The candidate should understand the workings of sewer and drainage systems, including cleaning force-mains and wet wells and exhibit strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and conflict-resolution skills
  • The candidate should establish and maintain effective working relationships, recognize and troubleshoot potential issues related to the operation and maintenance of sewer infrastructure
  • The candidate should hold a current and valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brakes or higher and maintain a satisfactory National Safety Code driving record and demonstrate no more than two infractions in two years or no more than four points in two consecutive years
  • The candidate should have no more than two preventable work-related driving or equipment operating accidents in any single year within a three-year period
  • The candidate should provide the following documentation for consideration, Commercial Driving Records Abstract (N Print) for the past five years, dated no more than 14 days prior to this posting, Insurance and Claims History for the past five years, dated no more than 14 days prior to this posting

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to maintain and operate a tandem axle truck with specialized cleaning equipment for high-pressure hydraulic main-line cleaning and hydro-excavation tasks
  • The candidates should be able to follow safe work procedures, standards, and regulations, performing pre- and post-trip inspections and carrying out preventative maintenance duties such as greasing, filter changes, and vehicle inspections
  • The candidates should be able to perform confined space entries following Worksafe BC and City of Vancouver guidelines and respond to emergency duties on an “on-call” or “standby” basis
  • The candidates should be able to assist with maintaining the inventory of tools, equipment, and materials and conduct light maintenance and operating adjustments to assigned vehicles
  • The candidates should be able to report mechanical deficiencies to their immediate supervisor and Fleet and Manufacturing Services for corrective action
  • The candidates should be able to document daily crew talks, tailgate talks, and risk assessments prior to starting work
  • The candidates should be able to act as and provide relief for the Sewer Cleaner Operator as required and participate in day-to-day operations, maintenance, and capital works undertaken by the City
  • The candidates should be able to maintain general housekeeping and cleaning of assigned vehicles and perform other duties and responsibilities
