Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Completion of a Degree or Diploma in related field or Red Seal Journeyperson Landscape/Horticulturist
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in horticultural operations
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be physically capable of performing the duties assigned to the class and able to work in all weather conditions
- The candidates should practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring as required
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should possess a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent). GDLs will not be considered and demonstrate supervisory skills and abilities
- The candidates should obtain and maintain a City Driver’s permit as a requirement of this position and hold an Emergency First Aid Certificate
- The candidates should have WHMIS training and demonstrate the ability to follow direction from the team leader and management supervisor
- The candidates should demonstrate the ability to effectively and efficiently plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinates
- The candidates should possess excellent communication skills (written and verbal), as well as analytical and problem-solving skills
- The candidates should have experience using Google Suite Applications (Gmail, Google Docs, and Google sheets) and have the ability to work and make decisions independently
- The candidates should have knowledge of City policies, procedures, bylaws, legislation, and the collective agreement between the City of Edmonton and CUPE Local 30

Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to provide direct supervision of field staff, ensuring efficiency, managing quality, and adhering to The City of Edmonton’s high safety standards while performing Horticultural work
- The candidates should be able to participate in performing a wide variety of semi-skilled manual duties in the delivery of approved work plans and able to train, direct, and supervise staff, participating in coaching staff in a way that creates a culture for growth and development
- The candidates should be able to train and develop staff knowledge and skills relevant to industry best practices in Horticulture and Landscape Maintenance within our scope and resources and able to train staff on the proper usage and maintenance of tools and small equipment, both powered and non-powered
- The candidates should be able to develop daily work plans and track accomplished work while following, setting, and adhering to maintenance schedules and able to assign tasks to individuals or groups of staff according to areas of responsibility, setting direction for staff to do their work in a safe and timely fashion
- The candidates should be able to inspect and approve completed work, providing feedback and further training as required to ensure quality results and have technical knowledge of Horticulture best practices
- The candidates should be able to coordinate mechanical repair and maintenance of powered equipment, and make provisions to account for equipment downtime
- The candidates should be able to assist with the registration, orientation, and training of staff, including delivery of safety and toolbox talks and promote and exemplify a safe work environment, adhering to OH&S and City of Edmonton safety regulations
- The candidates should be able to perform other related duties as required
