Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of the 10th school grade
Experience: Candidates should have experience in custodial, detention or related work or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to understand the needs and attitudes of prisoners and to deal with them in a firm, discreet, and compassionate manner
  • The candidates should be willing and able to handle prisoners who may be intoxicated and in unclean physical condition and to perform body searches as required
  • The candidates should have the ability to maintain mental alertness, act quickly, correctly, and calmly in emergency situations, and exercise moderate physical strength and agility as the circumstances warrant

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a sound knowledge of the policies and practices, methods, and procedures involved in the control, custody, welfare, and escorting of prisoners
  • The candidates should be capable of understanding and executing oral and written instructions
  • The candidates should have possession of a Designated St. John Ambulance First-Aid Certificate and certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation or equivalent
  • The candidates should should have the ability to obtain and maintain an RCMP Security Clearance

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to take responsibility for searching, guarding, and attending to the welfare and safety of prisoners in the RCMP cellblock area
  • The candidates should be able to perform this work on a call-out basis, with no assigned shift, and maintain surveillance over prisoners
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the feeding of prisoners and adhere to all RCMP procedures and policies regarding the treatment and handling of detainees
  • The candidates should be able to remain alert and vigilant at all times during their duty, ensuring the safety and security of both prisoners and themselves
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a positive attitude and demonstrate professionalism in interactions with prisoners and colleagues
  • The candidates should be able to strictly adhere to well-defined practices and procedures related to prisoner custody and care
  • The candidates should be able to respond to any emergencies or issues that may arise during their duty in the cellblock area
  • The candidates should be aware that their work performance will be evaluated by a superior, with a focus on continued alertness, attitude, and adherence to established practices and procedures
  • The candidates should be able to work effectively in a potentially high-stress and unpredictable environment, ensuring the safety and security of all individuals involved
  • The candidates should be able to adapt to changing circumstances and handle situations that may require quick thinking and decisive action
