Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training, experience or traditional knowledge related to the position
Experience: Candidates should have experience working in outdoor or remote environments, experience working in a resource, environmental, or fire management field and experience working in a team environment and demonstrate knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other related Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issues

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should obtain and maintain Reliability Status Clearance and a valid class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
  • The candidates should be willing to undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks, including an Occupational Health Assessment for firefighters and meet and maintain certified status for the Canadian Physical Performance Exchange Standard for Type 1 Wildland Fire Fighters (WFX-FIT) in accordance with Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) Requirements
  • The candidates should be willing to work and/or travel in adverse environmental conditions, varied terrain, isolated locations, and by various means of transportation, including fixed and rotary wing
  • The candidates should be willing to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays and willing to complete various training courses and attain certifications

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to maintain supplied equipment in a state of readiness, ability to perform calmly and take direction under high stress, ability to collect and organize information and ability to work safely and efficiently and personally connect with others
  • The candidates should communicate effectively and take responsibility while demonstrating integrity and completed a Basic Wildland Fire Management Course, Parks Canada Agency (PCA) or equivalent Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) certification (S-100/S-131)
  • The candidates should possess a Wildlife Danger Tree Assessor certification – Wildland Fire Safety module and have completed an Intermediate Fire Behaviour Course PCA or equivalent Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) certification (S-290)
  • The candidates should have completed an Introductory Incident Command System ICS-100 and hold a valid chainsaw certification through an accredited training provider and previous fireline or firefighting-related experience, including any volunteer work
  • The candidates should have recent (within the last 3 years) experience supervising fire crew member(s), while on the fireline, prescribed fire(s), and/or fuel management project(s)
  • The candidates should have a 40-hour Wilderness First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) and CPR certificate
  • The candidates should be willing to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment, participate in Incident Command System positions as required and assigned and willing to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required
  • The candidates should be able and willing to annually certify for helicopter hover exit and willing to obtain and maintain chainsaw certification
  • The candidates should have experience in fire management operations related to fuel management, prescribed fire, and/or fire suppression, experience working on the fireline, experience in using and maintaining fire equipment and experience in supervising staff in case of GT-03
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of fire management strategies and tactics for both wildland and prescribed fires and knowledge of key techniques and practices related to weather prediction, map and photo interpretation, and fire behavior prediction in case of GT-03
  • The candidates should exhibit the ability to organize work based on priority, bility to listen to others and communicate to inform, influence, and involve and ability to supervise staff while working in dynamic and high-stress environments in case of GT-03

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to help carry out the agency’s fire management programs through fuel management, prescribed fires, and wildfire suppression services
  • The candidates should be able to assist in various projects as part of the Resource Conservation team related to natural and cultural resource management, vegetation management, incident response, and management, including compliance
  • The candidates should be able to work alongside and support, as needed, other areas within the Northern Prairies Field Unit and respond to incidents across the country
