Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 12
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of 5 years of landscaping or related experience

Other Requirements:

  • The candidate should obtain an Ontario unrestricted AZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) within the timeframe determined by the employer
  • The candidate should complete all required on-the-job training/certifications (e.g., WHMIS, fall arrest, confined space entry, etc.) within the timeframe determined by the employer
  • The candidate should be familiar with Water Distribution operations manuals, standard operating procedures, and processes
  • The candidate should be knowledgeable about relevant City of Ottawa standards, specifications, and policies
  • The candidate should understand applicable departmental policies and techniques and practices used in excavation, backfilling, sodding, re-seeding, bedding, and laying interlock
  • The candidate should have knowledge of traffic control/roadway work operations
  • The candidate should possess familiarity with all applicable health and safety legislation, and have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace
  • the candidate should have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures
  • The candidate should effectively serve as a team leader/on-site supervisor
  • The candidate should possess good interpersonal skills
  • The candidate should communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • The candidate should be proficient in using handheld and desktop computers
  • The candidate should be capable of performing mathematical calculations
  • The candidate should have a good record of attendance
  • The candidate should be polite and punctual
  • The candidate should be physically able to perform manual labor
  • The candidate should be willing to work overtime when needed
  • The candidate should present themselves in a presentable manner to the public
  • The candidate should meet the language requirements of English for oral, reading, and writing
  • The candidate should possess a valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
  • The candidate should be aware that the initial pay may be 95% of the starting rate of pay, following the collective agreement
  • The candidate should consider that experience and formal training, coupled with demonstrated performance and ability, may substitute for stipulated academic requirements

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to oversee and monitor the work of crews (up to 10 people) performing soft reinstatements, such as laying sod, re-seeding an area of a lawn, and re-installing interlock, at sites that have been excavated by Water Distribution staff
  • The candidates should be able to lead and work with an assigned crew, demonstrating leadership and hands-on involvement in the execution of soft reinstatement tasks
  • The candidates should be responsible for managing the operation and maintenance of the City of Ottawa’s water distribution system, ensuring the continuous and adequate supply of high-quality potable water to customers at the lowest cost
  • The candidates should be responsible for various tasks within the water distribution system, including condition assessment, leak detection, operation, repair, and maintenance of mains, valves, services, fire hydrants, and providing support to City capital and private development works related to water distribution buried infrastructure
