Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of post-secondary education in horticulture
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of related horticulture and greenhouse experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be capable of performing the physical demands of the position, including lifting, climbing, and kneeling on a regular basis
  • The candidates should have a proven ability to multi-task and make decisions in an ever-changing, fast-paced construction environment
  • The candidates should have a proven ability to work cooperatively, efficiently, effectively, and fairly with City staff, the public, and other external agencies
  • The candidates should be willing and able to work in an outdoor environment and actively participate in daily activities in inclement weather
  • The candidates should be able to work constructively in a team environment or act independently as required, exercising good judgment and safe and appropriate maintenance practices and procedures

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have 1-3 years of experience involving manual, physical labour and operation of power tools, vehicles, and related equipment and be currently licensed as a Structural Exterminator with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) or equivalent
  • The candidates should have thorough working knowledge of horticulture operations and procedures, including working knowledge of plant types, varieties, plant growth requirements, pest identification, and control measures
  • The candidates should have a thorough working knowledge of the watering program for hanging baskets and planters, including the installation and maintenance of such
  • The candidates should hold a valid MTO ‘G’ class driver’s licence in good standing with a driver’s abstract acceptable to the City (maximum of 3 demerit points; maximum of 2 convictions within the previous 36 months; no driving-related criminal code convictions within the previous 36 months; and no ignition interlock restrictions)
  • The candidates should have basic math and computer skills and comfort in adopting new technology introduced for the support of operations; demonstrated knowledge of applicable software applications such as Inframap, city maps, and Microsoft Outlook
  • The candidates should have a comprehensive working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and applicable regulations for horticulture activities working from heights, First Aid, traffic control, sharps and biohazards, WHMIS
  • The candidates should have experience with winter control operations, including plowing, salting, and trackless operation
  • The candidates should ensure that all required certification or licenses are kept current and in good standing, attend training, and remain apprised of new technologies within the horticulture field; supplementary training

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform a wide range of administrative, maintenance, and operational activities related to Horticulture, including but not limited to plant propagation, installation, and maintenance, under the direction of the Supervisor of Horticulture
  • The candidates should be able to perform all deliverables and operate equipment related to horticulture, greenhouse, and landscaping requirements and participate in the planning and organization for greenhouse production and seasonal displays
  • The candidates should be able to provide occasional training and guidance to staff on operational activities, equipment, health, and safety-related procedures for which they are qualified and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and coordinate and maintain required documentation and record-keeping
  • The candidates should be able to participate in team development and implementation of operational and maintenance programs and provide exceptional customer service by responding to customer inquiries, customer needs, and communication with user groups on an ongoing basis
  • The candidates should be able to ensure safe and efficient operation, care, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles and perform daily checks on vehicles and equipment, including documentation of any issues
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a safe work environment by taking necessary precautions and applying safety procedures in accordance with health and safety legislation and City of Waterloo policies and perform winter operations activities and participate in winter control shifts
  • The candidates should be able to perform additional related duties as requested for Parks, Forestry, and Cemetery Services operations and participate on various teams and initiatives
