Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 10, supplemented by the successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the Machinist trade
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to operate heavy equipment and trucks into positions for repairs and alterations
  • The candidates should be able to perform related work
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work from sketches, blueprints, and verbal and written instructions
  • The candidates should possess the ability to layout and make patterns
  • The candidates should be effective in supervising one or more subordinates engaged in less complex tasks
  • The candidates should have the ability and skills in the use and care of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the trade

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a Machinist Certificate of Qualifications (T.Q.) of British Columbia or Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement
  • The candidates should possess thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the Machinist trade, supplemented by considerable experience as a Millwright
  • The candidates should be proficient in the use and care of tools and equipment for finishing and fitting a variety of metal parts and objects in the maintenance, overhaul, and repair of construction and maintenance equipment
  • The candidates should have a high degree of accuracy and precision in performing tasks according to instructions and specifications
  • The candidates should have considerable knowledge of hazards and proper safety aspects of the trade
  • The candidates should exhibit good organizational and interpersonal skills as well as good written and verbal communications
  • The candidates should be capable of working well in a team environment, with little or no supervision and under tight deadlines
  • The candidates should have the ability to work on multiple tasks as required
  • The candidates should be proficient in operating hand tools, vehicles, and equipment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform skilled shop and field work in repairing, building, overhauling, and maintaining a variety of machinery, mobile equipment, hydraulic systems, and components and structures
  • The candidates should be able to be responsible for carrying through to completion the construction, assembly, installation, and repair of a wide variety of metal parts, tools, and machines, and usually involves working with large and heavy pieces as well as various small instruments
  • The candidates should be able to be responsible for a substantial amount of millwright work
  • The candidates should be able to receive written and verbal assignments accompanied by sketches or blueprints, layouts, and by reference to broken, worn, or sample parts Included is the use of a variety of tools and equipment, including but not limited to lathes, grinders, milling machines, drill presses, threading machines, and related hand and power tools
