Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have graduation from a recognized program in Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Assistant
Experience: Candidates should have experience in basic laboratory techniques

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should occasionally lift or move supplies generally not weighing in excess of 25 lbs and occasionally carry, push/pull, and lift between 25-50 lbs
  • The candidates should constantly stand, walk, and bend or stretch into awkward positions when performing specimen collection procedures with patients
  • The candidates should constantly require fine finger and precision work when using needles to extract specimens, palpating for veins, entering data into the computer, and preparing specimen labels

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have current and continuing certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a Medical Laboratory Assistant
  • The candidates should maintain a satisfactory record of work performance

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to collect blood and other specimens from patients in a safe and hygienic manner
  • The candidates should be able to deliver specimens to the laboratory in a timely manner
  • The candidates should be able to sort, record, centrifuge, and prepare specimens for analysis according to established protocols
  • The candidates should be able to package specimens for transport to other testing locations while ensuring proper labeling and documentation
  • The candidates should be able to receive testing results and accurately record them for further processing
  • The candidates should be able to perform a variety of routine, automated, and manual tests under the supervision of laboratory professionals
  • The candidates should be able to adhere to safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively with laboratory staff and healthcare professionals
  • The candidates should be able to follow standard operating procedures and quality control measures to ensure accurate test results
