Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualifications such as graduation from an accredited school of law
Experience: Candidates should have four to six years’ related legal experience
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should be members, or eligible for membership, in the Law Society of Saskatchewan
- The candidates should have certification through the Canadian Institute of Access and Privacy Professionals and/or the Privacy and Access Council of Canada, or possess the Information Access and Protection of Privacy Certificate, which would be an asset
- The candidates should have experience in criminal and civil litigation, as well as employment law in a unionized workplace, which would be an asset
- The candidates should have skills in analyzing, evaluating, and organizing facts, evidence, and precedents, as well as in devising solutions to legal problems unique to a policing environment
- The candidates should have demonstrated knowledge in the interpretation and application of The Police Act, 1990 and Regulations, and The Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
- The candidates should have demonstrated ability to make decisions and/or give advice independently on complex and confidential issues
- The candidates should have the ability to work within a highly detailed and time-sensitive environment
- The candidates should have the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- The candidates should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships externally and internally
- The candidates should have the ability to pass the Saskatoon Police Service security clearance process
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to provide legal opinions on policy, agreements, legislation, and various areas of law, including Litigation, Criminal, Labour and Employment, Administrative Law, Municipal, and Privacy and Freedom of Information
- The candidates should be able to assist with preparing and responding to requests and inquiries from external stakeholders, including Freedom of Information requests
- The candidates should be able to assist with preparing for and responding to court applications, as well as appearing at various levels of Court, on behalf of the Chief of Police and the Saskatoon Police Service
- The candidates should be able to assist with preparing for inquests and discipline hearings
- The candidates should be able to assist with preparing, negotiating, and reviewing a wide variety of contracts and other legal documents for current and new initiatives of the Saskatoon Police Service
- The candidates should be able to meet, work with, and assist various internal and external stakeholders, including the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police, the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners, the City of Saskatoon solicitor’s office, community partners, and members of the public
- The candidates should be able to assist with reviewing and revising the Saskatoon Police Service’s policies and procedures
- The candidates should be able to assist with the education and training of Saskatoon Police Service members
- The candidates should be able to perform other related duties as assigned
