Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 10 education
Experience: Candidates should have six months of experience instructing and as a lifeguard

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to evaluate and adjust lesson plans to meet participant
  • The candidates should have the ability to work with the assigned, designated participant group and ability to apply theory to practical learning situations
  • The candidates should have the ability to exercise good judgment and provide direction during emergency situations

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should hold Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Certification (Pool Option)
  • The candidates should have CPR Level C certification and possess Red Cross Standard First Aid or Aquatic Emergency Care Award
  • The candidates should have Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Certification, Lifesaving Instructor Certification
  • The candidates should have knowledge of current lifeguard techniques, including first aid and emergency procedures, and instructional techniques, methods, and practices
  • The candidates should have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, peers, supervisor, and the public
  • The candidates should have the ability to demonstrate skills and techniques required and maintain the fitness level
  • The candidates should have the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with supervisor, staff, and the public
  • The candidates will require a Security Check and an acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) upon offer of employment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide instruction using effective and appropriate teaching methodology and safe participant procedures for aquatic programs
  • The candidates should be able to prepare lesson plans for swimming lessons according to instructional standards
  • The candidates should be able to complete worksheets, take attendance, and prepare participant progress reports
  • The candidates should be able to safeguard public admission and rental group activities and respond to emergency situations according to standards
  • The candidates should be able to participate in in-service training programs established to maintain fitness levels and lifeguard standards
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a hazard-free, clean, and safe pool and work area
  • The candidates should be able to provide education to participants and the public about safety in and around the water, through bulletin boards, handouts, and tours
  • The candidates should be able to conduct daily safety checks of play equipment, emergency first aid equipment, and perform daily water tests
