Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 10
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years experience in Welding and Sheet Metal Helper, Painters Helper, Grounds Helper, Furniture Repair Helper, Equipment Maintenance Helper, General Maintenance, Light Replacement and Minor Electrical Repairs

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to lift and carry 50lbs or more over difficult terrain in varying weather conditions

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a valid class 5 driver’s license and have construction experience
  • The candidates should rely on education and experience equivalencies and must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application
  • The candidates should be aware that this is a permanent seasonal position from mid-April until mid-November each year
  • The candidates should have knowledge of working in tidal conditions

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to assist with inspections and repairs of dykes and aboiteaux structures, such as repairing aboiteau gates and removing debris from flood control structures
  • The candidates should be able to operate, service, maintain, and repair equipment and structures, including fabrication of parts, minor welding, and basic construction
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate experience following an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) program, including documentation
  • The candidates should be able to cut and trim trees and brush using chainsaws, gas-powered trimmers, and hand pruners to maintain drainage ditches and aboiteau structures
  • The candidates should be able to apply herbicide and deciduous tree control using backpack sprayers and boom sprayers
  • The candidates should be able to operate farm tractors for mowing, raking, seeding dykes and marshlands, and have practical knowledge of working with heavy equipment
  • The candidates should be able to engage in considerable physical activity in difficult conditions
  • The candidates should be able to work in varying weather conditions and wet/cold environments
