Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should be certified as a First Mate’s Limited or Master’s Limited exceeding 60 Tons
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a Radio Operator’s Certificate in the Restricted Radiotelephone Operator category. A photocopy of the certificate should be attached to the application
  • The candidates should possess and be willing to maintain a valid Medical Certificate of fitness and a Marine First Aid Certificate
  • The candidates should possess a Marine Emergency Duty (MED) certificate issued by Transport Canada and have the ability to effectively train and provide work direction to the crew of a vessel
  • The candidates should have knowledge of the Province of Ontario Health & Safety Legislation and Canadian Maritime Health & Safety Legislation
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of relevant legislation, including City policies and procedures, and all applicable Provincial and Federal legislation regarding the operation of a passenger service within Canadian waters
  • The candidates should have knowledge and experience surrounding the safe loading and disembarking of vehicles onboard RO/PAX vessels
  • The candidates should demonstrate good judgment in public and labor relations and have knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations and labor and human rights as they relate to staff
  • The candidates should have the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and complete and maintain accurate reports and ship’s logbook

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to direct crews in the operation of a vessel and ensure the maintenance of the ship and safe delivery of passengers/cargo
  • The candidates should be able to direct crew, instruct, and check work performed such as painting and cleaning, ensuring the assignment of necessary staff
  • The candidates should be able to inspect the vessel to ensure standards of maintenance, cleanliness, and Transport Canada Maritime Safety and Security are maintained
  • The candidates should be able to check equipment such as navigation equipment, communication equipment, mooring lines, lifeboats, fire extinguishers, and hoses, noting repairs needed and advising the captain
  • The candidates should be able to ensure safe loading and disembarking of passengers/vehicles, ensuring orderly conduct of passengers, answering inquiries, and operating radios and distributing to crew
  • The candidates should be able to monitor marine traffic visually and with radar equipment, advising the Captain of any potential or real hazard as per Transport Canada Regulations and good maritime practice
  • The candidates should be able to direct the crew in casting off and mooring of the vessel and able to log departure time, number of passengers, and any other unusual occurrences
  • The candidates should be able to participate in the cleaning and maintenance of the vessel, noting any required vessel repairs and maintaining a record of completed repairs
  • The candidates should be able to pilot a vessel, as required, at the discretion, command, and control of the Captain
  • The candidates should be able to conduct and oversee vessel drills such as Man Overboard, Fire-fighting, Lifeboat and Rescue Station drills, and Maritime Security drills
