Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have completion of a Diploma in Building Technology
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should have demonstrated ability to achieve and maintain effective working relationships and exercise fair and sound judgment
- The candidates should have demonstrated exceptional conflict resolution skills and experience dealing tactfully, patiently, and effectively with irate or stressed clients
- The candidates should have the ability to quickly adapt to changes in the workplace and the ability to function as part of a team and work independently with minimal supervision
- The candidates should have the ability to write memos, procedures, and manuals, as well as instruct, advise, and mentor employees
- The candidates should be able to meet deadlines and manage a large volume of work with changing priorities
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have an equivalent combination of education and experience and extensive experience in interpreting and checking plans and administration of By-laws and Building and Development Permit work or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- The candidates should have demonstrated time and project management skills and exceptional customer service skills to deal effectively and tactfully with the public and staff and excellent interpersonal, oral, and communication skills to convey information and explain technical matters
- The candidates should have knowledge of computers, including POSSE and PRISM systems and a current and valid BC Driver’s License without restrictions affecting the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities
- The candidates should have transportation arrangements that meet the operational requirements of the department
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to review plans for 1 and 2 family dwellings, secondary suites, and other commercial projects of various sizes
- The candidates should be able to provide full and comprehensive Zoning & Building By-law reviews, making discretionary decisions and relaxations for projects such as change of use, Section 4 and 5 exemptions, and others
- The candidates should be able to review and clear permit intakes for various permit streams
- The candidates should be able to review business license applications for potential zoning and building requirements
- The candidates should be able to provide advice on related permit and processing requirements and liaise with staff in Permitting Services and other City departments to provide responses or seek advice on behalf of clients for process, technical, and design issues or to determine appropriate referral
