Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of post-secondary degree in Public Administration and Fire Technology
Experience: Candidates should have previous experience as District Chief

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess equivalent qualifications, along with an extensive background in fire technology and administration achieved through progressive experience in Fire and Emergency Services
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability and knowledge of fire tactics, medical aid, rescue and extrication, equipment and apparatus, incident command/management of emergency fire suppression operations
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, the Ontario Fire Code, Fire Prevention Regulations, and building construction
  • The candidates should possess strong interpersonal, customer service, and leadership skills, and be capable of dealing effectively with staff, management, elected officials, and the public
  • The candidates should have demonstrated knowledge and experience in working within a Unionized environment and the administration of the Collective Agreement
  • The candidates should have well-developed analytical, conflict resolution, written and verbal communication, and organizational skills
  • The candidates should be able to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • The candidates should be required to hold and maintain a valid class DZ Ontario Driver’s license
  • The candidates should be willing to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to support and advise Command staff during emergency response and incident operations and available for shift work and attend meetings on non-regularly scheduled days
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the effective and efficient allocation of resources on a daily basis and the proper use of Incident Command, Accountability Systems, IRIC, RIC, and Incident Safety Officer
  • The candidates should be able to act as Incident Commander at fire or emergency scenes and general direction and coordination for the Platoon and Senior Advisor at Fire Suppression incidents of a second alarm or greater magnitude
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the notification of all appropriate internal and external stakeholders and activation of serious emergency reporting and the initiation and completion of fire investigations and fire cause determination and notification and reporting to Ontario Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) and the appropriate deployment of all personnel, equipment, and apparatus for their Platoon, ensuring excellent customer service to Mississauga residents, businesses, and visitors
  • The candidates should be able to supervise work activities and ensure rules, regulations, policies, and procedures are upheld, taking disciplinary action and perform the duties of a supervisor and employer as prescribed in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and carry out assigned duties in the Attendance Support and Management Program, maintaining attendance reports and approving Time and Labour records, coordinating, scheduling, and authorizing overtime work
  • The candidates should be able to participate in recruitment and internal promotional processes and make recommendations for staff development and oversee day-to-day labor relations matters, dealing with employee issues and concerns and administer and implement assigned programs, executing administrative tasks as directed by the Deputy Chief of Operations and act as Designated Officer
  • The candidates should be able to participate in the development, evaluation, and revision of rules, regulations, policies, standard operating procedures, guidelines, long-range plans, and programs related to Operations and MFES
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate and control the issuing of protective equipment and uniforms to the assigned Platoon personnel and coordinate, supervise, participate in, and monitor training programs, public education, inspections, and other MFES programs
  • The candidates should be able to act as the Deputy Chief of Operations and participate in community and corporate events and respond to day-to-day questions from the public and the media and member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee, including conducting workplace safety visits
