Within Indigenous Services Canada, the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) is entrusted with the crucial mission of enhancing the health and well-being of First Nations and Inuit communities across Canada. FNIHB delivers a wide range of health programs and services, addressing the unique healthcare needs of Indigenous populations. Their efforts encompass healthcare access, mental health support, public health initiatives, and disease prevention. Through collaboration with Indigenous partners, FNIHB is dedicated to closing health disparities, promoting cultural safety, and ensuring that Indigenous peoples have equitable access to quality healthcare, reflecting Canada’s commitment to reconciliation and Indigenous self-determination. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position
Experience: Candidates should have experience as a Registered Nurse providing Public Health or Community Healthcare services

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing to travel in small aircraft, off-road vehicles, and by boat in varied weather conditions to communities in remote and isolated areas
  • The candidates should be willing to operate a government-issued vehicle
  • The candidates should be willing and able to travel for 14 consecutive days, inclusive of weekends
  • The candidates should be willing and able to work overtime on occasion
  • The candidates should be willing and able to work overtime in the event of a public health emergency or outbreak
  • The candidates should be willing to relocate to Alberta

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a Master’s degree in Nursing or a field related to health
  • The candidates should have experience with immunizations such as mass clinics (seasonal influenza, COVID-19), school or well-child clinics
  • The candidates should have experience in the treatment and management of Sexually Transmitted Blood Borne Infections (STBBI)
  • The candidates should have experience with maternal-child development, post-partum, or newborn assessments
  • The candidates should have experience in pediatric nursing
  • The candidates should have experience in infection control and prevention or Communicable Disease Control (CDC)
  • The candidates should have experience in harm reduction processes and procedures
  • The candidates should have experience with mental health programs or in providing mental health services
  • The candidates should have experience with health emergency management
  • The candidates should have experience working in outpost or remote settings
  • The candidates should have experience working with Indigenous people or organizations
  • The candidates should demonstrate integrity and respect, be adept at thinking things through, and should work effectively with others
  • The candidates should show initiative and be action-oriented, possess Indigenous cultural competency, and should have the ability to communicate effectively orally
  • The candidates should have the ability to communicate effectively in writing
  • The candidates should have a Reliability Status security clearance
  • The candidates should be willing to be assigned to a variety of communities as operationally required
  • The candidates should possess a valid driver’s license and hold a current BLS certificate, renewed annually
  • The candidates should maintain continuous professional registration, without conditions or restrictions, with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta

  • The candidates should be able to deliver comprehensive health programs, which include promoting, protecting, and preserving the health of First Nations populations
  • The candidates should be able to design programs in partnership with community members to promote environments that support good health
  • The candidates should be able to maintain cultural competence and provide culturally safe care, which is paramount
  • Surge Nurses should be able to reduce inequities in healthcare through community engagement and home-based wellness campaigns
  • Surge Nurses should be able to provide education and mentorship to strengthen health literacy and improve health system processes
  • The candidates should be able to engage in community outreach and health promotion
  • The candidates should be able to manage chronic diseases, communicable diseases, and outbreaks
  • The candidates should be able to participate in Sexual Health and STBBI programming
  • The candidates should be able to conduct vaccination and well-child clinics
  • The candidates should be able to contribute to maternal child health programming
  • The candidates should be able to respond to emergencies and support community health needs in the event of a natural disaster (wildfire, flooding)
  • The candidates should be able to provide case management services
  • The candidates should be able to administer wound and post-operative care
