Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a minimum of a Grade 12 diploma
Experience: Candidates should have 1 to 3 years of experience in a related field involving manual physical labor and the operation of power tools, vehicles, and equipment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be provide a Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check satisfactory to the City
  • The candidates should have use personal cell phones for entering hours of service, material usage, and circle checks, with Wi-Fi provided to avoid data charges
  • The candidates should work under rates in accordance with the CUPE 1542 Collective Agreement, with the potential for a Class E rate while performing winter control functions from mid-November to April
  • The candidates should work shifts based on operational requirements, including days, afternoons, evenings, weekends, nights, and holidays, with shift premiums applicable according to the CUPE 1542 Collective Agreement

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of winter control operations, including but not limited to salting, loading snow, and snow plowing
  • The candidates should have completed Snow Fighter training however, they must be willing to attend if not already
  • The candidates should have a valid MTO ‘DZ’ class driver’s license in good standing with a driver’s abstract acceptable to the City, which includes a maximum of 3 demerit points, a maximum of 2 convictions within the previous 36 months, no driving-related criminal code convictions within the previous 36 months, and no ignition interlock restrictions
  • The candidates should have a passion for promoting and maintaining a healthy and safe workplace and the ability to work respectfully and effectively in a team environment
  • The candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to delivering quality customer service
  • The candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion
  • The candidates should be provide proof of current and valid certificates, licenses, and educational qualifications and commit to seasonal positions, typically commencing mid-October through April 2025, up to a maximum of eight months

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to participate in winter control operations, including shift work for salt application and snow removal using snow removing vehicles and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to participate in general Transportation Services operations, including but not limited to, leaf collection, cold or hot asphalt patching, and landscaping
  • The candidates should be able to operate an articulated loader during winter control operations
  • The candidates should be able to maintain proper written or electronic records of activities as required by Ontario Regulations and internal policies and procedures
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the safe and efficient operation, care, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles, performing daily checks
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a safe work environment by taking necessary precautions and applying safety procedures in accordance with health and safety legislation and City of Waterloo policies
  • The candidates should be able to communicate and cooperate effectively with others, respecting the values of the corporation, both internally and externally
