Toronto Transit Commission, Department of Plant Maintenance based in Toronto, ON is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Sheet Metal Worker. The Toronto Transit Commission’s Department of Plant Maintenance is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the TTC’s extensive infrastructure and facilities. This department oversees the maintenance and repair of vehicles, equipment, and facilities critical to TTC operations. The Department of Plant Maintenance plays a crucial role in maximizing the lifespan and performance of TTC assets, ultimately contributing to the delivery of high-quality public transit services for residents. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates don’t need standard educational qualifications
Experience: Candidates don’t need experience although having experience is an asset

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be in possession of a valid Certificate of Qualification as a Sheet Metal Worker, License 308A
  • The candidates should be prepared to attain a valid Gas Technician 3 certificate as outlined in the Fuel Industry Certificates of Ontario Regulation 215/01 of the Technical Standards & Safety Act
  • The candidates should possess a valid, non-probationary Province of Ontario class “G” driver’s license
  • The candidates should have successfully completed the TTC’s in-house training programs for Operation of a TTC Vehicle, Subway/SRT Rulebook, Safety Orientation/Surface Maintenance, WHMIS, Confined Spaces, and Motorized Lifting Devices as well as other courses deemed necessary by the Department
  • The candidates should be medically fit to use a respirator
  • The candidates should have or rapidly acquire comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders, including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees
  • The candidates should provide a set of tools as per the established tool list

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to make and repair a wide range of sheet-metal products and parts related to shop equipment, transit vehicles, and various TTC structures and buildings
  • The candidates should be able to fabricate, design, lay out patterns, measure, cut, shape, bend, rivet, and weld various types of metal such as galvanized iron, copper, stainless steel, aluminum, etc.
  • The candidates should be able to use hand tools, manual and power-operated metalworking machines, including CNC machinery
  • The candidates should be able to install a variety of sheet-metal components or products such as complete exhaust systems for grinding machines, grinding dust containers, signs (illuminated, ornamental) and metal frames, metal piping, sand hoppers and containers, turnstiles, electrical boxes for fuses and switches, light reflector hoods, metal molds for door skins, heating and ventilation systems
  • The candidates should be able to carry out repair work on buildings, structures (e.g., roofs, eaves troughs, canopies, awnings, aluminum siding)
  • The candidates should be able to grind, polish, and buff a variety of finished metal coverings (e.g., stainless steel, copper, brass)
  • The candidates should be able to operate a TTC vehicle to transport crew and equipment to job sites
  • The candidates should be responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (within the area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service-provider and an employer
