Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and French Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a Certified Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be capable of intermittent lifting and assisting patients into specific positions during assessments and testing, as well as moving or repositioning heavy equipment
  • The candidates should expect frequent use of fine motor movements involving shoulders, hands, and wrists, applying significant pressure to ultrasound transducers to enhance and define images
  • The candidates should be aware of potential exposure to communicable diseases transmitted via human blood and body fluids and prepared to work in dimly lit environments to view sonographic images, which may lead to moderate eye strain
  • The candidates should be able to handle daily, frequent, and high-intensity demands requiring fine motor skills to enhance and define imagery using sonographic techniques, including palpating lumps and organs on various body parts
  • The candidates should be prepared to encounter patients who are very ill or have experienced severe trauma in the Diagnostic Imaging Department. They must remain calm, controlled, and professional in emotionally challenging situations, demonstrating compassionate care to clients
  • The candidates should understand that performing invasive examinations vagina, scrotum, breasts may cause high levels of anxiety in patients, requiring them to manage and alleviate this anxiety effectively while coping with potential mental stress

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess in-depth knowledge and advanced skills to perform and interpret detailed ultrasound examinations in adult and pediatric neck, abdomen, pelvis, scrotum, adult heart, deep leg veins, breasts, and pregnant abdomen, including the developing fetus
  • The candidates should have specialized knowledge of ultrasound physics necessary for creating and interpreting images
  • The candidates should demonstrate advanced hand-eye coordination to execute fine movements of the hand and wrist for accurate imaging of subtle and detailed anatomy
  • The candidates should have advanced knowledge of internal anatomy and physiology across all examined areas using sonography methods, with the ability to identify pathological changes
  • The candidates should understand and conduct quality control measures on all ultrasound equipment
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge and proficiency in operating a Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS)
  • The candidates should demonstrate initiative and persistence, including the ability to overcome obstacles and rejection without easily giving up
  • The candidates should possess effective communication skills to convey information clearly to both medical and non-medical individuals

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate patient and family-centered care and quality principles in the provision of services to patients and families
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the patient is a candidate for the examination and understands the procedure explain or educate
  • The candidates should be able to review patient history and obtain relevant clinical information required before performing the examination reviewing written and oral information from the patient
  • The candidates should be able to image appropriate anatomy, determine if it is normal or abnormal, and accurately document what is seen and alert the Radiologist or referring Physician of abnormal findings and advocate for the patient’s dignity and self-respect
  • The candidates should be able to process examinations and evaluate the exam for technical and diagnostic quality (this may include discussions with the Radiologist to outline procedures followed)
  • The candidates should be able to provide a verbal or written technical interpretation to enable the Radiologist to make a diagnosis and act in a manner consistent with their professional responsibilities and standard of practice
  • The candidates should be able to enter all exam results into the Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS)
  • The candidates should be able to promote the autonomy of patients and help them to express their health needs and values to obtain appropriate information and services
  • The candidates should be able to share their expertise with the interpretation of the ultrasound exam with practitioners. Their scope of practice does not include sharing interpretation of images with the patient, aside from revealing the gender of the fetus when available and consensual with the patient
