Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should accept change and adapt accordingly, drill down to understand root causes and resolve complex issues and be willing to be available as required on a 24/7 basis
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should possess GED and be a qualified and practicing railway locomotive engineer and understand the Operating Plan and Local Service Operating Plan and ensure compliance as it pertains to the yard
- The candidates should be or become rules qualified under the Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR)
- The candidates should maintain certifications and licenses, such as Engineer Certification and possess a valid driver’s license
- The candidates should pinpoint expectations and provide positive and constructive feedback
- The candidates should analyze, understand, and resolve local issues related to variances in operating protocols
- The candidates should understand and work with collective agreements and other applicable regulations and knowledge of and ability to conduct investigations
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to ensure the safe and tactical execution of the Operating Plan through active supervision of train crews, Yardmasters, support staff, and Assistant Trainmasters
- The candidates should be able to manage safety, service, productivity, financial metrics, and adherence to corporate values while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
- The candidates should be able to oversee the safe and on-time operations of all trains and contribute to the overall execution of the LSOP and Operating Plan
- The candidates should be able to conduct efficiency tests, train rides, and safety-related activities to support a safe and efficient operation
- The candidates should be able to investigate safety rule and policy failures, respond to safety, health, and environmental incidents, identify causes, and implement or recommend corrective actions and assist with safety and business plan roll-outs across the region
- The candidates should be able to identify and act on opportunities to enhance yard/road fluidity and productivity and build and manage a strong team of employees, including determining optimal staffing levels, recruitment, and development
- The candidates should be able to ensure compliance with CPKC’s policies and collective agreements while recommending changes and deliver optimal results against performance and financial metrics through effective asset utilization
- The candidates should be able to conduct investigations related to accidents or disciplinary matters in accordance with labor agreements and policies
- The candidates should be able to manage inventory for terminals and lines of road in their areas of responsibility and monitor and address rail cars that remain idle for 24 hours or longer
- The candidates should be able to understand business requirements, service commitments, and any applicable service penalty conditions for customers in their geographic area and attend derailments, incidents, or injuries as required when on duty, mentor and coach assigned Train and Engine employees effectively
