Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates don’t need standard educational qualifications
Experience: Candidates should have previous experience dealing with the public and children

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be capable of moving briskly and repeatedly in and out of intersections and standing for 45 to 90 minutes, 3 times a day, in all weather conditions
  • The candidates should be able to extend an arm out parallel to the shoulder holding a “STOP” sign (weight of approximately 1 pound) for up to one minute frequently
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to effectively hear and see oncoming traffic at a safe distance (approximately 300 feet)
  • The candidates should receive training on the Highway Traffic Act and Health and Safety Act as it relates to the job and City policies and procedures provided by the City

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to remain alert and perform responsibilities quickly and safely
  • The candidates should possess excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with management, pedestrians, residents, school officials and police
  • The candidates should undergo a Police Vulnerable Sector Check at the applicant’s expense and a Medical Evaluation

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to safely escort pedestrians across roadways at designated school crossings, reporting to the Supervisor, Crossing Guards
  • The candidates should be able to monitor traffic flow gaps and assume right of way while adhering to regulations, policies, and procedures, as defined in the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • The candidates should be able to control and obey all regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure pedestrians are safely assisted at designated school crossings
  • The candidates should be able to provide exceptional customer service to the public, ensuring safe crossing rules are communicated clearly, followed, and reinforced
  • The candidates should be able to document and communicate all incidents and unsafe conditions to management, school officials, and Peel Regional Police
  • The candidates should be able to adhere to emergency vehicle right of way, ensuring they have priority over both vehicular and pedestrian traffic
  • The candidates should be able to comply with all safety requirements by using and wearing all required safety equipment and clothing
  • The candidates should be able to assist in training new crossing guards
