Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have completed Grade 12
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in gardening
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have a recognized apprenticeship in Horticulture, and some experience in laying out areas for track and field sports
- The candidates should have completed a Landscape Horticulturist Red Seal and hold a valid Pesticide Applicator License, as required for some positions
- The candidates should possess thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in horticultural work
- The candidates should have considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in maintaining turf sports areas.
- The candidates should have considerable knowledge of plant material and tree care and a sound knowledge of departmental functions and operations as applied to the work performed
- The candidates should be able to cope with a wide variety of problems involved in the maintenance and supervision of ornamental park and sports areas and perform heavy manual tasks throughout the year
- The candidates should possess skill in laying out horticultural displays such as carpet bedding, subtropical displays, and other designed horticultural features and read, understand, and work from Landscape Drawings
- The candidates should be able to direct, supervise, and participate in the activities of one or more assistants and possess skill in the use and care of gardening tools and equipment
- The candidates should have knowledge and ability to manage the Integrated Pest Management program as applied to the landscape area under their care and possess basic mathematical and computer skills
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to coordinate and perform a variety of skilled horticulture work in propagating, planting, spraying, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, and renovating floral displays, shrub beds, and lawns in various horticultural and landscape settings
- The candidates should be able to plant, prune, and care for trees; maintain formal lawns, sports fields, and recreational lawn areas
- The candidates should be able to answer a variety of horticultural and recreational questions from the public
- The candidates should be able to supervise and participate in the work of one or more assistants engaged in parks horticultural and maintenance tasks
- The candidates should be able to prepare estimations and order materials, tools, and equipment while coordinating with suppliers and other City departments
- The candidates should be able to provide comments on detailed Landscape Drawings and maintain routine records related to the work and perform related tasks
