Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and French Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of high school diploma
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should complete a pre-employment medical assessment, which includes a physical, vision (including accurate color vision), hearing, alcohol, and drug audit
  • The candidates should undergo pre-employment qualification drug test(s)
  • The candidates should pass a drug test during the training process before receiving final qualification for the position
  • The candidates should be able to perform physically demanding work, such as walking up to 10 kilometers a day on uneven ground, climbing up and down, and lifting and pulling heavy objects (up to 80 pounds on occasion)
  • The candidates should be willing to work unscheduled shift work in a 24/7 operating environment
  • The candidates should have the ability to report to work within a two-hour call window, after scheduled rest
  • The candidates should be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for long periods of time
  • The candidates should be at least 18 years old

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should undergo a criminal history check
  • The candidates should have their education verified
  • The candidates should possess excellent focus, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask
  • The candidates should have strong communication skills, including providing clear and concise instructions and directions, including over the radio
  • The candidates should be able to pass the required physical job tasks for the job position, written examinations, read and understand safety instructions, read and understand operating rules and regulations and other written or printed material in English
  • The candidates should have general equivalency diploma (GED) is a requirement
  • The candidates should have a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to work in either train or yard service depending on seniority
  • The candidates should be able to carry out specific instructions detailing a train’s route and specific movements
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out coupling devices
  • The candidates should be able to observe, interpret, and relay signals and other indications affecting the movement of a train
  • The candidates should be able to signal crew members for the movement of the engine or train using specific signals or radio communication to indicate when to start, stop, back-up, set, or release air brakes
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a thorough understanding of and follow General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), general orders and bulletins
  • The candidates should be able to provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in emergency situations
  • The candidates should be able to move on and off moving or stationary equipment safely
  • The candidates should be able to fill out forms including train orders and switch lists and prepare clear and legible reports
  • The candidates should be able to handle emergency situations and operate fire extinguishers as well as apply first aid techniques
