Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a high school diploma
Experience: Candidates should have Freight Conductor experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work a flexible schedule with regular and predictable attendance, in line with the 24/7 railroading environment (includes night, weekend, holiday work hours, some overtime, and being away from home for extended periods of time)
  • The candidates should be capable of pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 90 pounds
  • The candidates should be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions
  • The candidates should be proficient in operating various devices on rail cars and locomotives, such as uncoupling levers and handbrakes
  • The candidates should be able to climb on and off ladders of moving rail cars
  • The candidates should have the ability to grasp and hold objects while riding the side of a train
  • The candidates should be able to walk for frequent extended periods
  • The candidates should be able to bend, stoop, squat, and kneel frequently
  • The candidates should meet medical fitness requirements for the position, including those established by the Railway Association of Canada, such as the ability to recognize and distinguish between the colors of signals
  • The candidates should have relevant work experience in similar working conditions or a regulatory or safety environment
  • The candidates should be prepared to participate in an intensive paid training program consisting of 11 weeks of training. This program includes 7 weeks of classroom training at the CN Campus in Winnipeg, MB, followed by 4 weeks of field training
  • The candidates should be aware that CN offers an enhanced and highly competitive training wage for this program
  • The candidates should understand that expenses related to transportation, accommodation, and meals while in Winnipeg are covered by the company
  • The candidates should be required to complete a minimum of 45 trips as an extra person on a crew to further develop their knowledge and skills

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be capable of writing and passing safety and rules exams
  • The candidates should obtain and maintain a Conductors Rule Card
  • The candidates should possess and maintain a passport allowing entry or re-entry to Canada and the United States (in certain specific locations)
  • The candidates should have proficiency in both oral and written communications
  • The candidates should have completed college or vocational or technical school and have Freight Conductor experience
  • The candidates should possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be able to ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, railroad rules, and regulations related to safety and operations
  • The candidate should be able to provide and receive various forms of oral and printed instructions concerning the movement and placement of rail cars
  • The candidate should be able to assemble and dismantle trains in the rail yard, and pick up and set off rail cars en route
  • The candidate should be able to observe, interpret, and relay signals to ensure safe train and locomotive movement
  • The candidate should be able to operate track switches to change locomotive and rail car routes
  • The candidate should be able to inspect the condition of a train and equipment
  • The candidate should be able to make effective decisions when in unfamiliar locations or emergency situations
  • The candidate should be able to communicate effectively with the Rail Traffic Control centre, other train crews, and other departments on a regular basis via handheld radio
