Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 8
Experience: Candidates should have experience in the operation of related vehicles used in general construction work

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to operate large trucks with attached or auxiliary equipment safely and effectively under difficult driving conditions
  • The candidates should have the ability to handle the physical aspects of the position and work in inclement weather when necessary, as this is operationally important
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to work alone with minimal supervision and in a team

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a minimum of 6 months’ (1040 hours) experience as a Truck Driver II or higher within the last 3 years and currently be on the Sewers Operations Fuel Truck spare list
  • The candidates should have a current and valid Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certificate or be willing to obtain TDG prior to being awarded the position
  • The candidates should have thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operations in operating a tandem truck
  • The candidates should have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The candidates should hold a current and valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brakes or higher, and a satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
  • The candidates should have a 5-year accumulation of no more than 9 points, not exceeding 3 points per single year
  • The candidates should have a 3-year accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work-related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
  • The candidates should be aware that employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail
  • The candidates should provide a Commercial Driving Records Abstract (N Print) for the past 5 years, issued no more than 14 days prior to this posting

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to ensure the truck is adequately stocked at all times, providing fuel, miscellaneous tools, and supplies to equipment in the field, and exchanging and delivering personal protective equipment, tools, or parts that are being replaced
  • The candidates should be able to perform daily safety inspections of the vehicle and keep accurate records pertaining to safety, timecards, fueling, lubricating, and other daily work
  • The candidates should be able to assist operators with maintenance and repair tasks, such as washing, cleaning, servicing, and making minor repairs to trucks as required; checking pressure and condition of tires, condition of transmissions and wheel housings; inspecting equipment for needed repairs; and operating a grease gun
  • The candidates should be able to operate the two-way radio for job-related activities using proper, brief, and concise radio procedures
  • The candidates should be able to report unsatisfactory equipment maintenance and neglect to a Supervisor
  • The candidates should be able to represent the City and deal with the public in an effective, courteous, and respectful manner
