Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Truck and Coach Technician 310T apprenticeship program of 6720 hours
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of 2 years of experience within a Municipal Fleet or similar truck and coach environment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work in uncomfortable or confined positions on occasion
  • The candidates should have the ability to lift and carry heavy parts and equipment safely
  • The candidates should be able to tolerate exposure to moderate amounts of noise, dust, grit, oil/grease, fumes, solvents, paints, lacquers, hot/sharp metals, and surface finishing products
  • The candidates should provide their own hand and air tools relating to the trade (SAE & Metric as required) according to provisions of the collective agreement

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as a Truck and Coach Technician 310T
  • The candidates should hold a valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as a Motorcycle Technician 310G for specific positions
  • The candidates should have obtained a TSSA Regulated Fuels Safety certificate (natural gas, propane, and/or alternate fuel) for specific positions
  • The candidates should carry a current Ontario Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) certificate card for specific positions
  • The candidates should ideally possess a valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated, which is considered an asset
  • The candidates should be familiar with city policies and procedures affecting shop operations
  • The candidates should possess considerable knowledge of vehicle systems and standard practices, safety issues, materials, tools, equipment, and supplies required to carry out maintenance operations
  • The candidates should be proficient in using both manual and electronic diagnostic equipment
  • The candidates should have the ability to utilize personal computers and navigate the Fleet Management Information System effectively
  • The candidates should adhere to the Code of Conduct rules and policies established by the organization
  • The candidates should have an understanding of the Collective Agreement relevant to their position
  • The candidates should be familiar with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and their importance in maintaining a safe working environment
  • The candidates should demonstrate safe work practices of the trade, including working at heights and lifting heavy objects
  • The candidates should have knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including understanding the rights and duties of workers
  • The candidates should be able to work independently with minimal direction and collaboratively with peers and managers as part of a maintenance repair team
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to read, understand, and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, service manuals, schematics, drawings, work orders, and any other documents used in the maintenance operation
  • The candidates should have the ability to make estimates of materials and time required to perform the work effectively
  • The candidates should be capable of proceeding effectively with emergency work, including on-the-road work with limited resources, to provide maximum results and meet timelines
  • The candidates should possess skills in the use of jacks, hoists, overhead cranes, lift trucks, and mobile lifting devices
  • The candidates should have proficiency in the use of high-pressure gas and electric welding equipment (Mig, Arc, Bronze, steel, aluminum) to effect repairs as authorized under the technician license
  • The candidates should possess analytical skills and be detail-oriented
  • The candidates should demonstrate good manual dexterity and the ability to work to close tolerances
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with management, manufacturers, and engineers to provide problem-solving and suggest corrections to problems found on specialized vehicles and equipment
  • The candidates should have the ability to provide training and explain instructions and guidelines to others effectively
  • The candidates should be proficient in efficiently using, operating, and maintaining tools, precision measuring instruments, state-of-the-art automotive diagnostic and test equipment to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions
  • The candidates should have a work record of good attendance and job performance
  • The candidates should possess sound judgment and use initiative to meet deadlines
  • The candidates should be flexible, adaptable, and able to accept constructive criticism
  • The candidates should be physically fit with stamina to perform the duties of the trade, which may include working in a standing position for long periods
  • The candidates should be able to work a variety of scheduled shifts
  • The candidates should meet the language requirement of English proficiency in oral, reading, and writing skills
  • The candidates should possess a valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to conduct diagnostic inspections and perform general mechanical overhaul and repair work as required for a Vehicle and Equipment Technician 2
  • The candidates should be able to perform scheduled preventive daily maintenance inspections and repairs on various vehicle systems and components, including steering, suspension, electrical, ignition, fuel, emission control/exhaust, engine management, hydraulics, and vehicular climate control systems
  • The candidates should be able to carry out maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of fleet vehicles and equipment, including those powered by gas, diesel, propane, or natural gas
  • The candidates should be able to work on various types of equipment such as tractors, graders, loaders, dozers, cranes, mowers, heavy vehicles (e.g., garbage trucks, zambonis, ice resurfacing equipment), and automotive-associated equipment like boilers and compressors
