Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidate should be dependable, available, of good character, and possess an understanding of young people
- The candidate should have the ability to perform the physical aspects of this position, including standing and walking for prolonged periods and carrying a hand-held stop sign
- The candidate should be willing to work in all forms of weather, including extremes of heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow, sleet, and wind, and be capable of working under all types of road conditions, with exposure to traffic noise and vehicle exhaust
- The candidate should be able to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals, including children, Town residents, and the public, and should immediately report any concerns to supervisory staff
Other Requirements:
- The candidate should possess superior customer service skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision
- The candidate should demonstrate good judgment to determine safe entry timing into the flow of traffic
- The candidate should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Highway Traffic Act
- The candidate should possess a valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License and provide a satisfactory criminal record and vulnerable sector screening check dated within the last 30 days as a condition of employment
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to assist elementary school children in crossing roads safely at designated school crossing locations in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Corporation guidelines
- The candidates should be able to wear mandatory safety equipment supplied by the Corporation of the Town of Oakville at all times while on duty
- The candidates should be able to demonstrate a good sense of judgment to determine safe timing for entry into traffic flow and cross the roadway in a quick, orderly, and safe manner
- The candidates should be able to exercise appropriate authority confidently, decisively, and fairly to require approaching vehicles to stop at crossings
- The candidates should be able to report and document any problems, such as weather conditions, children’s behavior, or motorists’ actions, to the Supervisor of Crossing Guards
- The candidates should be able to maintain punctuality and stay for the entire scheduled shift time
- The candidates should be able to apply safety precautions and procedures while performing duties in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the policies of the Town of Oakville
- The candidates should be able to commit to availability for the entire school year, from September until the end of June and perform other duties
