Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language

Experience: Candidates should have minimum of 2 years of recycling and refuse collection experience
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should possess the physical ability to climb to and from the operator’s position and have the manual dexterity and coordination to operate a machine
- The candidates should be able to perform heavy manual labor and use a high-pressure water hose to clean solid waste equipment
- The candidates should be able to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements and the physical capacity to perform the duties of the position
- The candidates should be able to work different work schedules, including weekends and statutory holidays, and work overtime and work independently and unsupervised while on the assigned route
- The candidates should be able to work safely without presenting a direct threat to themselves or others and maintain a good working relationship with management, other employees, and the general public
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have additional years of driving heavy road equipment, which may offset years of experience in the waste collection industry and hold a valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
- The candidates should have knowledge of practices, equipment, and vehicles used in waste services and be familiar with traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation
- The candidates should understand the hazards and safety rules and precautions of operating heavy equipment and know the roads or streets within the assigned contract zone and trained in proper lifting techniques and experience with refuse collection equipment operations
- The candidates should be familiar with rules, policies, and procedures relating to refuse collection and safety and possess a keen sense of mechanical and hydraulic functions to safely operate equipment
- The candidates should have WHMIS, First Aid, and CPR certifications and knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
- The candidates should have experience operating heavy equipment used for solid waste collection and read and follow route maps, drawings, and street signs
- The candidates should understand and follow written and oral instructions and keep detailed, accurate records concerning materials received, processed, and disbursed, as well as required equipment service records
- The candidates should be able to communicate with a hostile public when rules may cause them to become upset
- The candidates should demonstrate reliability and self-motivation, possess the ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy and display initiative and willingness to contribute as an effective team member and complete a Back-fit Test
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to be responsible for residential waste collection programs and services (including garbage, recycling, organics, and yard and leaf waste) for the two collection zones awarded to the City (currently totalling 114,119 homes)
- The candidates should be able to operate vehicles and equipment and perform general labor in the collection and disposal of trash, brush, organics, solid waste, or recycling materials (blue/black boxes)
